I have just been diagnosed with anal cancer; not yet started treatment. I believe this is relatively rare cancer. Anyone out there wanting to talk about it?

After finishing chemo and radiation things started to look up - the lymph node had shrunk and I started to feel good again. Then the end of July, my husband's brother was shot and killed in Denver. We spent 2 weeks there and when we returned, I had another CT scan done. My Dr. referred me to a Melanoma Surgeon. He removed 13 lymph nodes on the left side of my groin. Only one had cancer!!! After surgery, I developed an infection in the incision - which my surgeon had warned me might happen due to having radiation. That was 1 1/2 months ago and I'm still fighting the infection. It is getting better though. Fortunately, the nerves were cut on the top of my thigh, so there was no pain associated with the infection. However, this past weekend, I developed a new "leak" in a spot where there is feeling. Pretty painful! I'm now extremely grateful that I couldn't feel the other infections!! It's been alot for my husband to deal with, but he has been a rock for me. We keep saying that it's just another speed bump, and lately it's been one heckuva bumpy ride!!! But with our faith, a sense of humor and staying positive, we will get through it.
Love and prayers to all of you.

I was just diagnosed on 2/25/09 with squamous cell anal cancer. Went to lots of different doctors over the course of several months, including an ultrasound and a colonoscopy before the 12th doctor did a biopsy while repairing some fistulas. Pathology report indicated cancer. All the doctors keep telling me that I had thrombosed hemorroids and sent me on my way with suppositories and creams, telling me that hemorroid removal is very painful. I never could get anyone to realize there was a very hard lump that had me very concerned. Thankfully I kept searching for a doctor who finally gave me answers. My PET scan showed there is no additional cancer activity anywhere, only the local tumor. Had the PICC line put in yesterday and chemo and radiation is scheduled to begin on Monday. I don't even have any idea what to expect, but I'll just take one day at a time and get through it.

My partner was diagnosed with anal cancer on 13th March 2009 (his birthday) nice one, thanks for that!!!
He is currently in The Christie, Manchester having started his 5 & 1/2 week chemo/rad treatment.
We honestly do not know what to expect. So far he has had very few side effects. It's only day 3. Unlike him, I prefer to know everything there is to know about it, i.e. treatment plans, side effects etc. So if any of you can help, I would be more than grateful.
    Thanking you in advance

    Hi there,

I'd love to talk with you. My name is Scott. First, I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis. You are right it is a rare cancer. I, too, was diagnosed with anal cancer last  December 22. I started treatment which consisted of radiation (28 sessions) and 2 rounds of chemotherapy on January 12. I finished treatment in April; I had several setbacks during the treatment which meant I had to take breaks from radiation and chemotherapy. I should also say that I also have AIDS which made the entire treatment process obviously make much difficult.

This is just a quick, short snapshot of my story for you to decide if I may be of any help to you. I have to tell you I admire your courage to post about your diagnosis, in my opinion, it takes bravery to announce your diagnosis. My experience has shown me it helps beyond measure for me to be honest and open about what I am going through. All of my vulnerabilities, my weaknesses, my fears, my thoughts, I have expressed and even blogged about. I have found it, and still do, incredibly cathartic. There are times however that I feel like perhaps I've overshared or was too vulnerable; having said that I'd rather be too vulnerable than not share at all. Having this site, which I just recently found, has been incredibly helpful, I don't feel so alone anymore. It helps to know that there are other people possibly having some of the same issues as I am.

Enough about me. I hope this helps. I'm here if you would like to talk.

    -Scott

Hi just found this forum. I have anal cancer and saw that you also had it. How are you doing now?

  • Hi ,

Firstly welcome to the Macmillan online community although I’m so sorry that you’ve had the need to find us.

Many of the posts on this thread are quite old so I’m not sure you’ll get a response here as many people once they’re through their recovery following a cancer diagnosis & treatment begin a new in an attempt to leave their cancer journey behind them.

There’s many of us here though that are all at different points in our cancer journeys, personally I’m a little over 3 years post treatment with no evidence of disease (NED) & doing well, if you click on my username you can read a little more about me there.

If you go onto the anal cancer forum main page & click on ‘new here, say hello’ at the top of the page if you’d like you can introduce yourself there.

Have you begun treatment or have you just been diagnosed? It’s a really difficult, scary time receiving a cancer diagnosis but there’s many of us here that are testament to the success of this treatment.

    Nicola
