Hi everyone,

I have only posted once since my journey began.  Happy to say i got the all clear and VERY slowly i can see improvement,  however, still struggling with pain.  My anus and vagina still feel inflamaed (this was noted in my mri results) In the morning after going to the bathroom it still burn for a couple of hours.  Also my first pee of the morning burns also.   It is wayyyy better than it was , however,  anyone know how much longer i can expect this to go on ? For the vetrens out there " does it eventually go away ". As you all know the most frustrating part of recovery has been that there is no consistency so its hard to see progress.  And it often feels like there is no end in sight.  Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you again and best wishes to all

  • Hi  Brilliant news that you got the all clear. I didnt have either of your issues so cant help but i would say 6 months is still early in your recovery. Ive seen people on here with the burning pee so hopefully one of them will pick up on your post. I found it 2 steps forward and one back, im now over a year post and still have the odd issue but my oncologist isnt worried. If you are concerned speak to your special nurses they may be able to give you something. Xx

  • Hi,

Great news for you, such a relief!

I'm pretty sure your pain and discomfort will settle down as your body and internal skin heals, but in the meantime have you tried weeing into water, like into a sitz bath? Or pouring a jug of water between your legs as you wee? That seems to be something that works for lots of people. The other thing I was going to suggest was getting some cymalon or other over the counter cystitis treatment from the chemist. It's quite gentle and soothing and I found it helped.

You can get radiation cystitis or you could have an infection, so if it doesn't improve I would get back to someone at the hospital where you were treated, just in case you need some antibiotics.

    All the best, xxx

  • Hi thank you very much for your reply.  Every little thing helps.

  • Hi,

Well done on getting to the 6 month mark.
I understand your frustration and it can often feel like progress is one step forward, two steps backward.
Some lucky people seem to make a quick recovery, but for many it’s a very gradual process.

When I saw the Oncologist at the 9 month mark he said it was still early days, which really took me by surprise. I used Cystopurin for the burning and it helped. As others have said though it might be worth getting checked to make sure you don’t have a urine infection. I also used Epsom salts for a soak every day.
I really wish I could give you a timeline but it seems we are all different and this may be due to the size and location of the tumour.

I really hope that you are in touch with your team and that they can advise you. Sometimes it feels that when the treatment is over you are left managing any symptoms without guidance but please know that you can still contact them.

Really hoping that you turn the corner soon.

    xx

  • Thank you so much

  • Have most of your symptoms dissapeated now ?

  • Mostly. I fart a lot Joy. Have some urgency at times and the odd bit of bleeding. X

  • I'm now almost nine months out and notice the same thing. Hope this helps anyone else out there who is wondering what other people experience.

  • Hello

I am so happy to hear that you got the all-clear, that must be such a relief.

Recovery is a long slow process, and you have been given some good pointers about peeing under water or in conjunction with with a jug of water.  I am sorry that you still have pain, hopefully once the inflammation dies down that will ease off completely.

For quite a few of us, there is definitely a new normal, I have never completely gone back to the way I was before.  Nothing I can't live with, I have a full and happy and relatively active life, but my, I certainly took the basic human functions for granted!  However, peeing is definitely not painful, although can be a bit stop and start - I think that is due to the radiotherapy.

So please do get checked for urine infections; you need specific antibiotics that aren't available over the counter.  I went to my doctor because of burning when I peed and had to do a urine test right there and then. She confirmed an infection and I started antibiotics the same day.

Best of luck in your ongoing recovery, you will get there.

    Irene xx

  • Haha what is it with the farting ?  Im trying to figure it out . Was going to ssk my oncologist.  It started the first day of treatment and hasn't stopped Rofl
