Hi everyone, I’ve just found out that my anal cancer has come back a year after finishing chemo and radiotherapy. I’m feeling a bit lost and wondering — has anyone here been through this? Is it ever possible to have more chemo or radiation, or is surgery usually the next step? Any experiences or advice would really mean a lot.

  • Hi Alex sorry to hear your news but there will be options mine came back and I have chemo to reduce it themAPR surgery which I'm still recovering from in March this year .

Just remember as long as there are options for further treatment there is hope.

There ate others on this forum who also have had further treatment.

Good luck and if there is a thing you want to ask I hope Ican help with

  • Hello

I am so sorry that you are faced with this a year down the line, it must be such a disappointment.  As far as I know (but my medical knowledge is only what I have gained on here) radiotherapy is not normally carried out in the same place again.  You can have chemo more once, but normally the next step for recurrent anal cancer is surgery.  There are quite a few forum members who have had this, and whilst it is major surgery they are now recovered and living cancer-free.  So I am hoping they will pick up on your post and give you their own experiences.

In the meantime, I am counting on your team come up with the treatment plan very soon - once something definite is in the pipeline I am hopeful that you will feel slightly less lost.

Big hug, never forget we are here to support you however we can.

  • i had the surgery at the royal in liverpool when mine came back. it was easy, i had no pain after, they gave me morphine that you click yourself but i didn't even use it. the worse part was you can only sit for 15 minutes twice a day for 4 weeks so i was bored and mostly read kindle. i had a couple of sleepy days then felt fine x

  • p.s. it was so much easier than the radiotherapy, i wish i'd had the op the first time x

  • You mean APR? its easier that chemo and radio

i am man in 50th and i still want to keep my manpower.

  • hi mate

how long the go you have your surgery?

  • Hello ALEXbukaf4650d

Very sorry to hear that your cancer has reoccurred.

From my own personal experience, APR surgery and ELAPE are the next steps. I am waiting for my 3 month MRI scan on Tuesday, then a meeting with the surgeon to discuss likely surgery.

I think more chemo is an option and also brachytadiothetapy, which is internal and targets a very small area.

Y️out team will have a plan of attack once all the scans and information have been gathered, so don't loose hope.

    Sending my very best wishes.

  • i had the op in june it was easy, much easier than radiotherapy..everything does recover after radiotherapy but it was hard at the time x

  • Hi  ,

I'm so sorry that you’re facing a recurrence of your cancer, it’s the news that nobody wants to hear.

Like others that have replied to your post already, from what I understand surgery is the next step for a recurrence of anal cancer due to not being able to have the same area treated with radiotherapy again. Having said this your oncology/surgical team are the ones that will advise you the best. I hope a treatment plan is put into place swiftly for you.

We’ve had quite a few people on the forum that have had APR surgery in my time here & most that I know of have recovered successfully from the surgery & gone on to live full, active, cancer free lives again. This doesn’t distract from the anxiety you must be feeling around receiving this news though.

has given a really positive perspective of the surgery which I hope is reassuring.
