Pelvic Radiotherapy and long term low WBC

Hi everyone,

Has anyone who has completed chemoradiotherapy experienced long term low white blood count?

In July this year I asked the GP to check my hormone levels to see if I was now post menopausal and as an aside she did a full blood count, which flagged up that my WBC is low.

I’ve had 3 more blood tests since then all showing the same - I’m between 2.6 and 2.9 when it shouldn’t be over 4.

They’ve checked for all sorts of things but nothing is showing any cause for concern, I’m not getting lots of infections etc so that part of my WBC is ok (the GP showed me a breakdown).

The GP suggested that if I have another blood test in January and it still shows a low WBC then they are putting it down to be my new norm (I had read that because there is lots of bone marrow produced in the pelvic area that pelvic radiotherapy can affect WBC).

I completed my chemoradiotherapy in May 2024, so just curious if anyone else has experienced this too?

  • Hello

I have had 2.9 a couple of times and then a 4.0 - the GP called me in for a routine appointment and like you there was nothing wrong.  Sometimes my kidney function isn't quite as it should be either, it may all be part and parcel of the treatment we have had.  My Gp doesn't seem unduly concerned and that is good enough for me!
