So the other day I mentioned the radiation cystitis and you all very kindly gave me some great advice. I’m also having issues with BMs , it doesn’t matter how much water I drink , I also take stool softeners but I’m finding that going to the loo, my stools are really hard and I’ll spend all day wanting to go, so I end up taking hours. I have a healthy diet but aim wondering if anyone else has these problems, is this normal?
Can't give any advice, having lots of issues myself, but I'm the wrong side of treatment to know anything beyond... I can only say that I hope you return to your normal function soon and that dealing with these kind of symptoms is truly horrible. It's unseen and 'unmentionable' in day to day life, so I feel for you. Xx
Hi Mix,
Sorry you’re going through so much. It sounds really uncomfortable.
My BMs were initially explosive then went the other way ( sorry if tmi). I was told to take 4 of the stool softeners daily plus some laxido sachets which helped.
This was about 10 weeks after treatment though so was through the healing stage by then. It might be worth giving your team a call to see what they recommend at this stage . I hope this gets better for you soon. Xx
Hello Mix
Even now I take Laxido (I now have a stoma). And Laxido was an integral part of my day after treatment, going to the loo was so painful as although the outside heals I think the inside - well my inside - took longer. And hard stools were miserable.
Pre stoma I used to take prune juice first thing in the morning as well as Laxido, that was guaranteed to work.
Best of luck!
Irene xx
Hi Mix ,
This was exactly the issue I had. I was told to up the stool softeners. Just be wary though they don’t work straight away so if you take 2 instead of just the 1 give them time to work before taking another, I took 4 in a 24 hour period (on medical advice) & couldn’t make it up the stairs to the loo in time! Don’t be in a rush to stop the stool softeners either I continued using them for 3 years post treatment, in the last 6 months of that I found I could usually get away with using 1 every other day. In hindsight my longer term issue was anal stenosis which has definitely improved over time.
