3 month biopsy

I am three months post treatment and am just in the process of having my scans. I saw the colorectal surgeon the other day and he is organising another biopsy for me! Did anyone else have a biopsy at this point? I wasn’t expecting this - I thought the scans were enough to tell if the treatment has been successful!

  • Hi Heather,

I personally haven’t heard of this before as I just had the scan and no other investigation at 3 months.          I know that the treatment can leave a lot of scar tissue and that it can be hard to differentiate which is why they often say that the 6 month scan is more accurate. Did they explain why they want to do this?

Im sorry that this is happening for you and can only imagine how much it must be worrying you. Not pleasant to go through another biopsy at this stage.

Hopefully other forum members can shed more light and may have experience of this.

    Big hug to you xx

  • Hi  ,

I know of a few people that have come through our forum over the time that I’ve been here that have had EUA’s (examinations under anaesthetic) following treatment. Many have been to take a small biopsy as scar tissue at the site of the tumour & subsequent radiotherapy is common following this treatment & sometimes the scans can’t determine between scar tissue & residual disease so I think your team are just being vigilant which is good news. I know it sets off alarm bells & I think we can all empathise with the way you’re feeling about this but hopefully the results will bring good news for you. Please let us know how you get on.

  • Hello Heather09

I am so sorry that this has cropped up, but as it has been said your team are being really careful which is a relief.  I was sent for a sigmoidoscopy (it was longer than three months after treatment) because there was slight thickening at the tumour site, but it was just scar tissue.  So I very much hope the results for you are fine.

However, it is totally understandable that this is such a worry for you in the early days after treatment and unfortunately part of the cancer diagnosis rollercoaster.  We can all empathise with what you are going through, please let us know how you get on.

And we are always here to support too, should you need it.

    Another hug from me

    Irene xx

  • Hi Heather09

I'm not a doctor but I would imagine it's to check if it's scar tissue or not as depending on the type of scan you have they can't always tell the difference. I understand its scary though, I panicked as I was only expecting one scan at the 3 month point and had three. It's good that your doctor is on it though. Sending hugs. Xx

  • Yes- I agree. It’s making absolutely sure that all is well. I know it’s an anxious time but I think as others have said- your team are being extra vigilant , which in the end is all we want.

    Sending you calming vibes
