End of treatment.

So I have just finished my 5 1/2 weeks of chemo and radiotherapy. I saw my oncologist last week but nobody has said it is cured? Having had 3 MRIs and 2 CT scans prior to treatment and none showed the 2 inch tumour only changes in lymph node I am concerned that another scan may miss anything left. The tumour only showed on PET scan after biopsy confirmed the cancer.
Any advice on what I should expect next and how long I will be left in limbo, this is more stressful than the treatment

  • Hello Sue,

Well done on getting through your treatment, hope you are feeling ok and taking good care of yourself.

Please try not to panic or stress things too much; this is a very effective protocol and it is still very early days, so I'm not sure anyone can tell you anything just yet - the treatment carries on working even though the sessions have stopped, which is why the symptoms may continue for a little while yet.

They won't be able to tell how it's gone for you until things have settled down a bit - usually 3 months, but some people don't get confirmation that all is ok until their 6 month check.

In the meantime, be assured that it's all still working on you. Please let us know how you get on, and I'm sure many others here will join in to reassure you. I am in my fourth year post treatment, and all good so far.

I wish you strength and healing.

  • Hi Sue m

Well done on completing treatment, now rest and recover. Like Mrs Vanilla has said the treatment will continue to work even though you aren't having anymore sessions. You will more than lightly be scanned at 3 months post but the 3 month scan is sometimes not clear as the treatment is still working, the 6 month one is the important one. I know its difficult but just concentrate on getting over the treatment and be assured that the treatment you have had is as a general rule very successful. Sending hugs. Xx

  • Thank you so much for your reassurance. It’s really stressful being in limbo. X

  • I am not confident in scan results as 5 scans failed to identify it. Is it usually a PET scan ? Even my oncologist agreed the scans failed on this occasion, only highlighting reactive lymph node not sure if that is usual or not.

its good to know treatment is still working x

  • Hi

I had mri, ct and pet at the 3 month point, I'm just over 4 months post now. The mri and ct showed something still there but they couldn't tell if it was tumor or scar tissue, the pet showed it as no active cancer at present although there was some new uptake but they said that was probably radiotherapy damage trying to heal and they would be able to tell better at the 6 month scan. Xx

  • Thank you so much for response. Good to hear you are doing ok.
it may have been useful if I had been made aware before/ during treatment that there would be no immediate answers. It has been really helpful joining here to learn more x

  • Hello Sue,

I had a DRE at 3 months and an MRI at 6 months, now just DRE and good poke around. I think all hospitals/oncologists have their own ways so I would not try to guess what'll happen to you - just take things step by step, and make sure you are happy that you understand what they tell you. I found sometimes I was in such a flap I didn't really listen and had to ask next time I went.

By the time you have scans and examinations in a few months, things will have started to settle down and they should be able to get a much clearer idea of how you are progressing.

In the meantime, take the best care of yourself. Rest when you can, eat what you fancy and allow your body to heal.

  • We are all here for you if you need it. Xx

  • Thank you so much each and everyone of you who have offered support and advice. I have felt very isolated through this , I am only the second case my hospital has dealt with and have at times feltike their lab rat Rat
