I just want to share with everyone that I have completed my first week - mitomycin c and Fluroucil 5FU given via portable pump on Monday so I went home and attended daily radiotherapy. Pump down yesterday and not due again until week 5.
no real issues at the moment except losing too much weight but it seems to have taken my appetite away.
I feel very exhausted but otherwise all good and just want to get on with it now.
going to have a relaxing weekend before radiotherapy next week.
staff in all departments were so lovely which made it easier
thanks to this online community which is great for peer support.
Well done! You are on the road to success now. I’m 3 and a half months post treatment now. Looking back- there were some tough days , but so worth it to be hopefully rid of this disease. Keep us posted. We have learnt so much from each other and the support is invaluable. Has got me through.

Hello Coffeequick
I think that most (apart from a very few) staff that work in any cancer department must have a special calling; I have never had a bad experience and I think they have such compassion when dealing with patients who have had a cancer diagnosis. So I am pleased that this is the case for you. And well done for getting through that first week. You will be tired, the body is busy trying to repair itself after chemo/radiotherapy and it takes a lot of energy. Just be very kind to yourself and get as much rest as you need.
Have you tried strong-tasting food? My husband made me cheese on toast with mustard and onions every day! It was the only thing that I wanted and I never tired of it right until the end of treatment and beyond. Some people manage to eat very healthily but I didn't, I was losing weight too and it was a case of whatever I could stomach. I also supplemented with EnsurePlus, a small drink that has all the RDA of vitamins and minerals.
And keep marking off the days!
Irene xx
Hi Coffeequick,
Great job on getting through week 1! I too had the take-home pump, which I was very happy to get rid of, as I am sure you are. Hope you are feeling "liberated" and enjoy a relaxing weekend!
P.S. As for weight loss, it seems so common. I just read an educational piece emphasizing how important protein is for the body to heal from the radiotherapy, so I'm trying to incorporate more of that myself (I just finished week 2). It's tough, though, when you have no appetite, especially after chemo. I did notice that my appetite improved as I moved away from the chemo infusion, so I hope you experience something similar!
Well done Coffeequick ! You’ll be nearing the end before you know it. Once you get into the swing of those daily appointments then resting up on a weekend you’ll find the weeks will fly by. Enjoy your weekend & I hope next week goes smoothly for you.
Nicola
Hi Coffeequick,
Well done on completing your first week of treatment. It’s such a big one as everything is new and not knowing how you’re going to be. Of course you are exhausted and hope you are able to rest up over the weekend.
Im so glad that the staff have been so supportive. It makes such a difference to the whole experience.
Wishing you well for next week. X
Hi Poppydays,
Good to hear that you have now finished week two! You are getting there and good that you no longer have the pump. I hope that you are doing as ok as possible so far.
The treatment really does affect the appetite and I think weight loss is all part of it. We all seem to have struggled to find what food we can face during treatment and between us have had some interesting daily diets! If you can focus on protein that’s great and will help.
keep crossing of the days and wishing you well for the weeks ahead.
Warm hugs to you xx
Hi PEB24,
So nice to hear from you--I hope you are doing well and your energy levels are rebounding! Week 2 was a little bumpy with mucositis (ugh) and diarrhea, but at least the mucositis seems to be winding down. Still trying to work out the kinks with the diet, though--you sure learn fast what doesn't agree with you!
Keep us posted on your progress. I'm sending warm thoughts your way! Xx
