Stoma reversal or make permanent

Hi everyone

my questions goes to those of you who have had or have stomas.

Has anyone had a reversal and if so how was it?

i saw the surgeon this week who has now told me that if I want to try for a reversal it has to be within 6 months (bad timing)  if I don’t have it in this time I’ll never be able to.

He has also given me the option to have my loop made to en end colostomy.

im aware of all the risks/pros/cons of all but m just not sure what to do. My gut is telling me to try for a reversal as I don’t want to regret not trying but I just don’t want to end up in a worse position than I’m already in.

any advice welcome x

  • Hi

I have an end colostomy, so I’ve always known a reversal would never be possible. However, if I could have had a reversal, I wouldn’t personally. But lots of people do have successful reversals, and hopefully they’ll come along and post their experiences. If you try it and don’t feel it works,  it could maybe be reversed again and made an end colostomy so perhaps you could go with your gut and have it done? I’ll let the folk who’ve had their reversals chip in and give their experiences and tag my friend  who had it done a while ago. She did wait longer than 6 months for hers.

Might be a good idea to post your question in the Stoma Support Group which has a special sub forum for reversals and you’ll be able to connect with more people who’ve had it done. Sorry, I didn’t realise this was in the anal group.

    hi Ker25

My surgeon said that reversals were best performed at three months and should be done within six.

As a non urgent operation and the waiting list being long I was thirteen months so I was concerned

It was a little hairy to begin but I’m now great and have good control also my rectum was removed and a new one created so my storage area was limited which did cause some urgency however that now has vastly improved

I had a lower anterior resection with a loop Ileostomy

Did your surgeon explain why it had to be done within the six months?

    People have waited years

I was reassured that I could have a new stoma formed if I found that I had no control which reassured me

    Best Wishes

I can't add to the excellent advice you have already had here as I have no experience in that area.  I just wanted to wish you all the best in whatever you decide.
