Hi all,
I finally have my surgery tomorrow, it’s been a long 2 weeks and I have not being doing too well mentally. I had another telephone consultation with my Dr just to go over a few things and he said it will be quite a long surgery as he will need to do something called an advancement flap (a bit like a skin gaft) and that I’ll need about 8 stitches! I didn’t realise how big these ‘lesions’ are to need all of this.
Anyway I’m sure I will be back on here in the coming days but just one question for now. Those of you that had surgery/biopsies, did you have to take antibiotics after? He only mentioned this the other day and although it makes sense, they have always messed with my gut pretty badly. The ones he said he will be giving me are called Metronidazole and when I looked them up it seems they are the worst ones you can take and even come with a black box warning. I guess antibiotics should be the last thing I’m worrying about at the moment and if I have to take them then I do, but I just wondered about other peoples experiences.
Many thanks and hope you are all doing ok.
Sarah
Hi Sarah80
I needed antibiotics after my surgery and was given Metronidazole. I’m afraid I didn’t do at all well on them and felt awful, vomiting etc. I personally would never take them again. I simply stopped taking them and felt so much better. I had a pelvic abscess, and a small infection on my abdominal wound but these tablets were awful for me. Sorry, I don’t have a positive experience to report!
All best wishes for your surgery tomorrow.

What I did is not to be recommended but I didn’t tell my doctor I stopped taking them-I was discharged from hospital on the day the first lockdown was announced, so being able to see any doctor was impossible. My partner spoke to the local pharmacist and they suggested different dressings for the small are of infection on my abdominal wound, which cleared up nicely and very quickly. I’ve never had a bad reaction to any medicine or antibiotic before, but this wasn’t good at all. Can you mention your concerns when you are at the hospital and see if there is an alternative you could have?
Sarah xx
Yes I am definitely going to mention my concerns and see if there is an alternative. I think due to the area it is probably at high risk of infection and I did read that metronidazole is the one they recommend. My gut never recovered from the last antibiotics I had and that was nearly 10 years ago so I’m always weary of them, and these ones sound awful! x
Yes, it’s commonly prescribed, but when I mentioned it to a friend she said that she had exactly the same reaction as me. I would never take them again! Good luck with getting something else.

Sarah, I haven't had these but I have had a very strong reaction to other antibiotics so I completely understand your fears. All that said, you may not have a reaction to them, but as the other Sarah suggests, it would be a good idea to mention to the team treating you your previous reaction and they may come up with something different. Very best of luck tomorrow, sending you lots of good wishes

Hey Sarah,
I know the lead-up to surgery can be mentally exhausting, but you’re almost there—just focus on getting through tomorrow, and take it one step at a time. The advancement flap sounds like a more involved procedure, but it’s good that your doctor is being thorough to ensure proper healing. Try to rest tonight and not dwell too much on the details; the hardest part is often the waiting. If you're worried about post-op infection, Metronidazole is a strong antibiotic, but it can be rough on the stomach. You might want to ask your doctor about probiotics or an alternative if you're sensitive to it. Hydration and gentle foods will help too!
I’ve taken Metronidazole before, and while it wasn’t the easiest on my stomach, it worked incredibly well for me. I had an infection that needed a strong antibiotic, and Flagyl (Metronidazole) cleared it up completely. I ordered it from a reliable pharmacy—topsup24.com/buy-flagyl-uk.html—and the delivery was super quick. The quality was excellent, and it did exactly what I needed without any issues. Just make sure to take it as prescribed and drink plenty of water! Wishing you a smooth surgery and recovery—keep us posted when you’re up to it!
Take care!
