Chemo hasnt worked !

yesterday we were told that my husbands first lot of chemo hasn't worked. Today was going to be the day they did the bone marrow biopsy to see how it had gone but that has now been cancelled.  We have a meeting with the consultant this morning to discuss.  My husband was on his own yesterday when he was told and we are both, understandably, absolutely devastated.  Very nearly 7 weeks into this journey and back to square 1.  Husband asked about further treatment and consultants were having meeting last night to discuss.  That particular consultant wants to carry out a very agressive form of chemo but needs to run past the panel.  Husband also asked if this doesn't work, what then?  Apparently the answer was - then we have run out of options.

Has anybody else been in a similar position?  does run out of options mean completely run out or run out of cures, but drugs are available to elongate life? Also i have some questions written down but should i be asking anything else?

thank you

  • Hi  and sorry to hear this but this can happen.

Although I have a different type of blood cancer we had to ‘keep going’ with my ‘only’ aggressive option in the hope it would open the door for my to go into Stem Cell Transplant….  and it did.

Go into the meeting asking what ‘they’ are recommending….

if your husband is not being treated at a top cancer hospital then you need to ask for his case to be reviewed by other experts.

I was treated by a good team of Haematologists but they still put my case out for review to ensure they were doing their very best.

If they say that ‘they’ have no further treatments ask about clinical trials.

Even when I was told that the plan I was on was my final roll of the dice I was told that there would be othe ‘palliative’ treatments that would give me an unspecified period of tine

  • My husband can't have any more chemo, as he had bad reactions to all the types he was given. Now classed as palliative, but still able to have blood and platelet transfusions to improve his quality of life and hopefully give him a bit more time.

  • thank you so much for replying, i 'm sure its not easy to write that.  My husband starts new treatment on Monday but we will know i 4 weeks if its working. The consultant wouldnt discuss the options if its not working so i really do appreicate you reaching out to me.

  • thank you Mike as always.  Meeting went suitably well and husband starts Monday on FLAG-Ida and Venetoclax.  Will know if its working in 4 weeks so we obviously have everything crossed.  Trying not to think of what happens if it doesnt but its so hard not to.  We've managed to get him home for the weekend so as to have a break before treatment starts.  Have been advised that this will be very rigerous and the side effects much more pronounced.  Looking back on the last chemo, he didnt seem to have any side effects except boredom.. so maybe it just wasnt strong enough.. !!  I'm sure everybody feels the same but its so hard not being in control and not knowing what will be.

  • FLAG-Ida is one of a number of salvage treatments that are used to open the SCT Door.......yes it's strong but it has to be to achieve its goal. Everything crossed for this to do the job ((hugs))

  • Hi Fur baby mummy

My wife was given Flag ida whilst in Hospital for a fourth time following her diagnosis for AML.

It is a quite strong drug and I expect the team have told you this. It did work well and kept her in remission for 20 months, she relapsed and then had a SCT back in 2021, now doing very we'll.

    Wishing you all the best
