My 86 year father has just been diagnosed with aggressive AML with a prognosis of less than 8 weeks. Until two and a half weeks ago, he was healthy and fit and hadn't been to the doctors in over 30 years apart from flu jabs etc. He has moved in with me and my husband to be cared for at home. My mum is in end of life care 70 miles away, so at the moment I am being pulled pillar to post and on top of that worrying about work and whether I will be good enough to look after my dad properly. I am very scared as to what is going to happen. Are the clinicians normally correct with their times scales, my dad has not been offered chemo as they said it would be too aggressive and wouldn't really achieve much. I am really just asking for any advise as I am totally bewildered at the moment and don't know where to turn.
Hi and welcome to this corner of the community but I am so sorry to read about both your mum and dad, this is indeed a challenging time for you and your family.
AML when aggressive can just get out of control and unfortunately these consultants know the signs so well but can only make a guess with regards to timescales.
I think you would benefit from talking with others who are walking the exact same type of cancer support path as this will help you navigate this unwanted journey.
The community have very specific groups covering these challenges so can I recommend that you join and post in our supportive Carers only and Supporting someone with incurable cancer groups where you will connect with others supporting family and friends.
Navigating the community will depend on the device you are using. To join a group just click on the green link above then scroll down and choose 'click to join' or 'join' on the page that opens.
