Hi guys. My dad who's 72 was diagnosed 3 weeks ago with aggressive AML . Chemo is nor an option because of my dads age . His next appointment at hospital is on the 29th of this month . Over the last 3 days his health has deteriorated massively. He has suviere pain in his kidney area and his spleen. Also this evening his throat is very sore and he has no appetite. Any advice? Best pain killers?
Hi and welcome to the Online Community, although I am sorry to see you finding us and so sorry to hear about your dad.
These types of question and medical challenges do need to be put to his medical team/GP as they can make decisions based on how he is. So do call his team or GP first thing tomorrow or if you are finding things getting worse call 111 and get advice.
This is a difficult time for everyone but getting clear information and support from medical professionals is your top goal.
You may find our Carers Only, Friends and Family and Supporting Someone with Incurable Cancer groups to be good places where you can connect with others support family through their cancer journey but more importantly the carers care for each other.
Just follow the links I have created then hit the ‘Join This Group’ tabs just under the main group names, then go to the 'Start a Discussion' tab and set up your very own Discussion and introduce yourself to the group and ask your questions.
You may also find our various Macmillan Support Line Services to be helpful - call them on 0808 808 00 00 This free service covers Emotional Support, Practical Information. Clinical Information, Financial Support and Work Guidance mostly open 8.00 to 8.00 but check the link.
We also have our ‘Ask an Expert’. section where you can post questions to our mostly Volunteer Experts but please allow 2 working days to get a reply.
((hugs))
Hello
Have you managed to find anything to help? Your Dad should be allocated a CNS (clinical nurse specialist) who is also a Macmillan nurse who I would advise talking to about this. From my experience they want to do everything they can to make you as comfortable as possible. Is he in hospital or home? There are calorific drinks he can have if he's not eating... these can be prescribed or you can buy at a pharmacy (I had these as I wasn't eating either) Sounds like he has infection which is very common with AML due to it compromising the immune system which will be causing him the pain. His medical team should be getting on top of this pretty quickly?
Best, Anna
