Hi all,
Finished treatment just before Christmas, had Covid, then got the all-clear from AML on 16th Jan.
Problem now is I am incredibly weak and I tire so very quickly. It is unbelievably frustrating. I have an appointment with a physiotherapist who specialises in assisting cancer patients, but now until 11th March.
I am desperate for any suggestions what I can do manage the situation and try to start building myself up in the meantime.
Thanks in advance,
Tracey Palmer
Hi TraceyEnterprise as you are ‘just’ say 6 weeks out from finishing your treatment you are in the very early days in your post treatment journey.
My Consultant told me that going through treatments like these was like doing a boxing match and a marathon every day over the months of treatments and this was done without any training.
Think doing the London Marathon without any training and you had to finish it as your life depended on it……. this is the journey you have been on so it most likely will take much longer than you would think to get back to some normality
What to do, set little achievable goals for each day, if in the early days you only achieve one goal - then great. Look to move further the next day.
Check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing and give support to all the family…… and there are post treatment courses that helps you navigate thus part.
Hi Tracey congratulations on getting the all clear on AML. Did you have stem cell transplant as well as chemotherapy? I have AML, currently in hospital after chemotherapy and due for stem cell transplant in March….
It’s normal to feel very tired…. If possible do a small amount of exercise and build it up slowly from there. If you feel tired have a nap dont be too tough on yourself
best wishes
Just chemo, we caught it very early, thankfully.
Hey I've been given the all clear I'm back to work now I am tired a lot too it must be part of getting better hope it all goes well
Hi Gray97 ….. you may want to check for any Local Macmillan Support in your area as MacMillan do run post treatment rehab type courses….. but also check for a Maggie's Centre that can be reached as I attended their Where Now? course and I found it very helpful.
Thanks Mike.
No Maggie's near us. We have contacted the Wiltshire Health Coaches, but they aren't really specialists. Will have a look at MacMillan again.. they weren't particularly useful in hospital.
You could also call the Macmillan Support Line is open between 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00 as they ‘may’ have some local information on the system.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
