Hi everyone,
I was diagnosed with Acute myeloid leukemia in December 2024 and underwent 4 cycles of chemo, including 2 lots of HiDAC chemo. I had the FLT3 gene mutuation and unfortunately there was only a 9/10 donor match and due to having lots of complications during round 1, it was decided too risky for a stem cell transplant. The plan was to stay on a gene inhibitor medication for a few years but unfortunately I relapsed about 6 weeks after finishing my treatment . I'm now back in Hospital having completed FLAG-ida chemo which is much stronger. I'll have another cycle then stem cell at the end of October. Really nervous about the 9/10 match and the implications of this but I have little choice. Has anyone else been in this position please and can share any positive stories?
Thank you in advance ️
Hi again Deb C and sorry to hear about the bumps in the road.
Remember that I don’t have AML but was treated for 2 rare types of T-Cell Non Hodgkin’s Lymphomas.
My brother was my donor for both my Allo SCTs….. (June 2014 then Oct 2015) he was my 10/10 match….. But over the years I have talked with many people who have had a successful Allo SCTs with a 9/10 match….. even a few with a 5/10 match.
The main implications of a mismatch Allo is the donor cells need to work slightly harder, I asked my SCT coordinator about this and she said that it’s not seen as a problem.
Hi Mike, that's really encouraging thank you! It all seems rather daunting at the moment and this year has seen every month apart from June in Hospital. Looking forward to being able to move on and go into 2026 and your comments bave reassured me thank you!
Morning Angel82, sorry to hear you've relapsed. I had the stem cell in October 2026 and it was tough but recovered fairly well. Unfortunately in April this year I learnt I had relapsed again and there's no more treatment they can offer me. I'm currently having weekly blood and platelet transfusions to keep me topped up as a long as possible. I know other people who had a stem cell and havent relapsed though and its the best chance of a cure. Unfortunately my AML is tricky and doesn't like to be beaten.
I wish you all the best in your decision! Deb
