When to buy travel insurance

Hi

I have had neoadjuvant chemotherapy ( 6 months) and had breast surgery last week. I will have radiotherapy and immunotherapy to follow so I am still in active treatment. I was diagnosed in September 2025 and am Stage 3.

i had already booked a cruise for August 2027 to Northen Europe, before being diagnosed. When is the best time to apply for travel insurance? My health otherwise is good so this is all quite new to me!

TIA!

  • Hi  and welcome to the online community

The best time to buy travel insurance is at the time of booking your holiday, as you're then covered if you have to cancel due to any unforeseen issues such as your health, health of your travelling companion, etc.

I don't know if you've looked through the members recommended travel insurance thread yet, but that's a good starting point to find insurers that specialise in covering people who have had a cancer diagnosis. There are lots of recommendations from others there so your best bet is to make a list and then settle down with a cup of tea and your phone to contact the insurers.

You might find this information from Macmillan on cancer and buying travel insurance helpful

  • Hello ,

That's a heavy treatment plan and I wish you well and success with it.

I can't say exactly when you'll be able to get insurance quotes for travel cover but, based on proposal forms I completed for my current policy, would expect it to be at least 12 weeks after radiotherapy is completed.

The other consideration is what the payment schedule for your cruise is so you can ensure you can get travel insurance at the right cost before you're too financially committed.

If you come back here when you're ready to ask for insurance quotes people wil be able to give you recommended insurer names based on their recent experiences of buying cover.

All the best for the rest of your treatment.

  • Hi Anne

i did try to but travel insurance at the time of booking but companies said it was too far in advance (it was over 2 years in advance of the holidays!). Can’t win!

    Thnak you

  • Hi Derek

i do have an option with the cruise company that allows me to defer the cruise for a year with no financial penalty up to 3 months before the cruise but I would like to go next year if I can.

it has been a fairly long treatment plan, triple negative breast cancer is tricky to treat but thank you for the advice. That timing would put me around a year in advance of the cruise so works well. It was complete luck that I booked it for 2027 and not 2026, I think that gives me more chance of getting travel insurance at an affordable price.

    Thanks for your help,

    Linnie006

  • Oh, that's a shame.

I see from your reply to Derek that you're being treated for TNBC. That's the same type of breast cancer as I had. I did go away pretty much straight after treatment had finished, and the premium wasn't too expensive, but my holiday wasn't a cruise so I don't know how that'll affect the price.
