Last December (December 2024) after an Xray and 2 scans I was diagnosed with quite advanced cancer in my liver and my lungs, and my wife and I at very short notice had to cancel a trip to the Caribbean to visit family for Xmas and New Year.  After a biopsy and a PET scan my cancer was confirmed as secondaries from colon cancer which I had 8 years previously, and my oncologist at Edinburgh Western General Hospital said that I would be a suitable candidate for immunotherapy, a 2 year course consisting of one infusion every 6 weeks.

I had my first treatment on 14th March, which went well, but a few days after the treatment I was told that I had clots in my lung (probably from the cancer) and an irregular heart beat (possibly from the treatment).  I was put on blood thinners.

I have now had 7 treatments (ie 7 infusions), and the results so far are excellent.  My cancer is now "non-measurable", my clots have gone, and my oncologist is happy for us to go on a 3 week trip in January between treatments, to visit our family in the Caribbean, provided I have travel insurance in place.  I was advised to contact one of the specialist cancer insurers.  Unfortunately the first 4 insurers I contacted declined to quote, and the 5th quoted over £8k.  I then decided join the Online Community to see what other people's experience on this might be, and I quickly realised that lots of people were singing the praises of Insurancewith for their bespoke understanding of cancer sufferers' different stages in the treatment process.  I therefore contacted Insurancewith who have been very patient in understanding my quite complex situation, and the end result is cover for my 3 week trip at the level I want, for a fraction of the price I was quoted elsewhere.

So, grateful thanks to Insurancewith, Macmillan and the other members whose posts I read.

David Edinburgh.

  • I'm at the Western too.  Also completed immunotherapy.  Also used the company you mention.  But they wouldn't insure me for a supported moving-on cycling holiday!  Bizarre, but I see the funny side.

  • Thanks for your post.  I have read some of your posts on other strings.  You have done very well. I hope I can follow your example.  It is a pity insurancewith would not cover your cycling holiday. They had no problem with me playing golf. They must think it is safer than cycling.  Best wishes, David.
