Hi,
Does anyone have experience of GPs refusing to provide a verbal assessment/confirmation of whether they are well enough to travel abroad? My GP Practice have a policy that they will not issue Fit to Fly letters for airlines but I am not seeking that. My insurance company needs me to confirm that I have seen a Dr, who that Dr is and that they have agreed I am well enough to travel. They have explained that this is a verbal confirmation and then if I raise a claim they will check with that Dr that I did indeed check with them prior to taking out the policy if they confirm I did the claim is processed if they say I did not then it means I lied and the claim is rejected, no liability on the Dr. Despite my having explained this several times to my GP practice they are sticking with their policy. I am terminally ill by the way but still well enough to travel abroad in my view, Senior Nurses at my hospital and at Sue Ryder Hospice agree with me and would be happy to provide the assurance to the insurance company but it has to be a Doctor. If anyone has experience of this and how they navigated it I would be most appreciative.

If there are senior nurses in charge of your care you must be under an oncology doctor ? Ask for their details and he/she might be able to help.
My oncologist was happy to provide a fit to fly letter when I had a recent break from treatment. I have stage 4 bowel cancer so on maintenance treatment.

Hi Caroline, that's a good point but I was trying to keep the post short. To clarify your point when I was diagnosed as terminal in Feb this year I declined the offer of Chemotherapy so officially I am no longer under the Oncologist however he and the UGI team have been very supportive and his team do touch base with me every few weeks even though they do not have to. I did go on holiday back in May/June and at that time it was the Oncologist who saw me and said I was OK to travel, even though he maintained it was really for the GP to do that but they had refused due to their policy.
