Diagnosed with only 2 weeks until I travel

Hi all,

I'm due to be flying to Australia in less than 2 weeks for my best friend's wedding. This has obviously been booked for months, including my travel insurance, but in April I was diagnosed with Stage 2a melanoma. I told my travel insurance, they charged me a little bit extra and I thought everything would be fine. I suppose I was in denial that my sentinel lymph node biopsy might come back positive and was convincing myself it wouldn't.

Results came back positive yesterday, and I'm already booked in for a CT scan for tomorrow.

So now I am due to fly next Friday and I don't know what to do about my travel insurance, or whether I should even be going away for 2 weeks in case the CT scan comes back with bad news and they want to start treatment immediately! Feeling a bit anxious, overwhelmed and confused about all the different possibilities.

  • Hello EmW123,

I'm really sorry you've found yourself in this predicament.

In your situation I would be inclined to speak to the insurance company first as quickly as possible to see how they react.

    They might:

    * agree to keep you covered (with or without an additional premium) on the basis you're not undergoing any treatment yet or

    * decline any further cover in which case you should be able to claim your losses minus excess from them

    * ask you to get more information including maybe your consultant's confirmation that you fit to travel (or not). If not, you'd be back to claiming for your losses.

They should be able to give you their answer more or less straight away and if they won't now cover you may unfortunately have to miss your trip.

If they do continue to insure you I'd then be inclined to urgently contact your consultant to ascertain:

*timescale for the CT result (might be after your return in any case) and

*if the scan result is bad, timescale for further treatment starting (again might be after your return)

    * If scan result and start of treatment are likely to be before your return whether delaying treatment as a result of the would be OK or disadvantageous and you shouldn't go.

If the consultant says you shouldn't travel then you should be back to your insurer to make a claim for the cancelled trip on medical advice (needing written confirmation from your consultant).

Sorry this looks complicated but it's essential you cover all bases so you remain covered or if not can claim costs if you shouldn't travel.....and the insurer doesn't have a reason to decline any necessary claim you have to make.

I do hope you can make this trip.

    Derek.

  • Thank you Derek for your reply - I think a conversation with both insurer and consultant are definitely the way forward - just wish I could continue to bury my head in the sand for a few more weeks and deal with it when I get home!
