Travel Insurance For Terminal Cancer Diagnosis

Hi

My husband has recurrent gastric adenocarcinoma, widespread metastatic disease (terminal cancer from primary oesophagus cancer at the G junction which he was diagnosed with Nov 2023, apparently successfully treated for, but found out it had spread in Nov 2024 ).  In December 2024 he was told he had on average 13-14 months to live with treatment and on average 3-6 months, with rapid determination, without treatment.

He started a chemo regime based on his diagnosis, a CT scan several months later (at the 4 month point) revealed the chemo hadn't worked - so effectively he hadn't had treatment, but was still up and about, albeit in a lot of pain.

After a combination of radiotherapy on a lump in his cheek that had stopped him from being able to open his mouth wide enough to eat (now completely disappeared after radiotherapy), a new chemo regime (paclitaxel) and a prescription of Etoricoxib (anti-inflammatory) that's completely stopped the pain & spasms he was having in his lower back/hip and leg, for the past 8 weeks he's been feeling good.

He's tolerating the new chemo regime well, he's eating normally again, he's walking and driving and we've had a few short breaks away.

We've both always loved our main annual summer holiday away. He's keen to be able to go abroad this month or next - we'd only go as far as Spain. His consultant is supportive of this and has confirmed he'll write a letter to this effect, if any travel insurance company needs one.

Can anyone recommend a travel insurance company that will specifically include terminal diagnosis in the people they're willing to insure?

It gets disheartening repeatedly filling out forms or providing information only to be rejected (including to insurance companies that state they won't insure someone who is terminal with only 6 months or less predicted ...as though they will if the prognosis is longer than 6 months, but rejected due to terminal diagnosis without even asking how long had been given - that was insure for travel health).

Insurance with are phoning us on Tuesday as it came up they needed more information (Albert & Eddie came up with the same and had the exact same telephone appointment dates and times so I didn't book another as I think they're the same company).

Can anyone who has personal experience of having a terminal diagnosis and still managed to get travel insurance let me know who you went through please.

  • Hi Andrea , I’m sorry you are both going through this . We have not had a terminal diagnosis but we were referred to two travel insurance companies one was insure cancer I called them but when I explained I did not want to insure for cancer related conditions as my tumour is stable and simply awaiting removal he referred us to globe link. I wanted to be insured for falling and breaking a limb etc . They just ask you to list the conditions you are happy not to be covered for . I listed kidney cancer and I paid £50 for a week … vastly different to the £450 to £ 2000 or even worse “sorry we can’t provide cover “  Depending on what you want to be covered for I would try these. My friend has a terminal diagnosis and doesn’t bother now she travels with her GHIC and takes her chances  .xxxxxx

  • Hello redandrea71,

I see you've got insurancewith 'phoning you but you've not arranged to do the same with albert&eddie. You're right that they are owned by the same holding company but I don't know if you're aware that a&e is a comparison site so asks other insurers for quotes. I went via a&e and received quotes for a few insurers including insurancewith and Holidaysafe - both using the same base policy wordings. I went with Holidaysafe because they charged less than insurancewith and it might not be a bad idea for you to go through the process with a&e in case they're able to come up with something useful for you?

Just a suggestion, I do hope you can find a solution enabling you to get away on holiday.

    Derek.

  • Ok, I'll book a telephone appointment via A&E as well - thanks for the heads up

  • Immediately went back into the Albert & Eddie website (that I still had open at the option to book a telephone appointment to provide more information) - selected the next available date and time for the appointment and it came up with the message stating "booking already exists, click here to cancel or amend" - as I've only booked an appointment via insurance with website, it's obviously picked up on that one - when Insurance with phone, my husband will ask them if I can speak on his behalf (as his voice is hoarse due to a growth in his throat) so I'll ask them if they're able to compare companies the same as A&E and mention I wasn't able to make a separate appointment via a&E and ask about holiday safe (or I will try googling holiday safe and contact them direct).

  • OK thanks for the info, sorry you've gone round in a circle. I do hope you can get something useful arranged.
