Advice needed after travel insurance got cancelled

After a diagnosis of cancer all clear insurance cancelled our travel insurance.  My husband hasn't yet been able to get insurance for the trip.  The insurance company refunded a partial amount of the cost of the policy retaining £1,500 of the money paid and sent us an email saying we had requested it was cancelled.  So now we have a holiday he can't go on which we will lose and struggling to get insurance.  Any recommendations of next steps.  Any recommendations for insurance companies to try?

Just a follow up to my initial post.  We did it! We went on holiday.  Myself and my husband travelled to see the Total Solar Eclipse in Mexico  This was our 21st eclipse when we travelled in April this year.  We went to Mexico with Insurance with Insure cancer.  It wasn't cheap but we did get insurance and everything went well.

The process was a little bit tortuous.  We had insurance in principle which cost us just under £4,000 for medical cover only (with a steep excess on the policy).  The company agreed to insure us subject to a consultants report and some test results before we travelled.  This meant until the Tuesday before we flew on the Friday there was a risk that the insurance policy would not be sent to us.  We understood that if the policy would not released to us that we would get a full refund of the money paid.  Although at that stage we would have lost the cost of my husbands holiday.  We were willing to take this risk with the upside that this was the only opportunity for him to go on the trip.

We had no problems while we were away and hence we cannot comment on that part of their claims process.  The people we spoke to at Insure cancer understood my husbands condition and as soon as they had the test results they wanted they were able to confirm the insurance within 24 hours.

In the meantime I did go back to All clear and they have now refunded us all of the money spent on the original insurance policy that had been taken out pre the cancer diagnosis.

Choosing to travel to Mexico is an expensive region so we would have to pay a high price for the location.  Speaking to a broker who understands your condition rather than relying on a computer algorithm is essential if you have complex medical conditions.  We knew that he was fit enough to travel and unlikely to fall ill but needed insurance just in case.

  • That's great to hear Gill and it sounds like it would have been an amazing holiday.
