Inlaws have Stage 4 cancer. Looking for holiday insurance in case we have to cancel / curtail to come back.

Hi all

First timer here ...

My in-laws are both living with Stage 4 Cancer.  Both are receiving treatment and both are doing well at present.

My wife, child and I are looking to go on a big holiday to USA in the summer.  All 3 of us are in good health.  We are looking for insurance that would cover us should we have to come back early in the event of my in-laws health deteriorating.

All of the insurers I have contacted so far, just ask about US and don't seem to cover anything that involves a pre-existing condition.  Has anyone had experience of getting covered with a 'just in case' type option that would cover them for coming back if needed?

Airlines etc say that they will only cover the fare if a family member takes ill / dies, but not with a pre-exisitng condition.

Just wondered if anyone else has walked this road before?

Many thanks.

Anth

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I think that the only way you'll be able to find out if travel insurance cover will pay out if you have to cancel your holiday or come home early because your in-laws have cancer is to ask that question of the agent before you start answering all their questions or take a look at the policy document before you phone.

I've just looked at the travel insurance policy that my husband and I have at the moment. The relevant part, under ill-health of close relatives, states that "we wouldn't be covered for cancelling or cutting short our trip if we were aware in the 12 months leading up to taking out the insurance or booking the trip, whichever is the later, that a relative has been given a cancer diagnosis".

If you do manage to get insurance to cover you for cancelling or coming home early because of your in-laws, it would be great if you let me know as I know this question comes up fairly often and I'm not aware of anyone who has been successful yet. That doesn't mean that you won't be, it could just be that they haven't let us know.

  • Hi

I am in a similar situation with in-laws who are unwell, and just reviewed my own cover as we are travelling in a few days. We do not have cover for this and cannot get it because of the pre existing condition clause, if we have to curtail the trip. I think you’ll find it difficult to get cover for this to be honest. In our case, we have accepted the risk and have funds available should we need to come home early.

I agree with  that you need to ask the question at the start of the process of getting a quote, but it is a very common exclusion in my experience of insurance over the years. A sudden death of a close relative would be covered, but not if they had a condition we knew about when we travelled. I do wish you luck in finding cover, and it would be good if you could come back and let us know if you are successful.
