Getting Cover

I have low grade non-hodgkins lymphoma and have not had any treatment.  It is a "watch and wait" approach.

I have cover with our standard bank travel insurance for all my other conditions but they will not cover the lymphoma.

For our last holiday, we took a single trip policy with Staysure which was very expensive.  My consultant has said that I do not need cover for the condition, but I would really like to have some sort of cover, without the extortionate premium!

Any suggestions please?

Thanks,

Mark

  • Hi Mark  and a warm welcome to this corner of the Community I am Mike and I help out around our various Lymphoma support groups (Look through THIS LIST where you will find all our many dedicated cancer support groups listed)

I was diagnosed way back in 1999 at 43 with a rare, incurable but treatable type of Low-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma eventually reaching Stage 4a in late 2013 so I do appreciate the challenges of this journey rather well especially the challenges of getting Travel Insurance.

The problem with a consultant saying that you don't need to get cover for your NHL flies in the face of how Travel Insurance set their Risk Assessments....... Full disclosure is always advisable as in the event of you developing any issues this can reduce the risk of an insurance companies wriggling out from paying out.

I was basically on Active Monitoring for about 14 years before I needed full on treatment and most companies looked at this being treatment so prices were high.

I had to be 2 years in remission (2018) before I could get any price but these decisions are often all down to cancer types, treatment, prognosis and the resulting risk factor put on you by the insurers risk assessment - I am very open to serious infections due to a reduced immune system so this is seen as a high risk factor for insurers.

Comparison sites tend to use the same algorithms so getting a clear price can be difficult and it’s not that unusual to be turned down or told to call the insurers.

It is actually more effective to call a few insurers directly as this means that you have answered all the questions correctly and in doing this a suitable policy can be offered and price given.

Do have a look through the 2023 New Thread as it's where the majority of recommendations from other forum members are. You can also look through all the individual members posts in the group as well.

I do hope you can get cover.
