Hi there
My mum has a Hickman line which needs to be flushed weekly, but she is desperate to get away on some special holidays. Her chemo is three weekly and her consultant is happy for her to travel between doses. Has anyone managed to travel abroad with a Hickman line in situ? And if so, how did you go about getting it flushed?
This feels silly but insurmountable at the minute, so thanks so much for any help!
Hi GymboScaresMe and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I can completely understand why your mum would like to get away on holiday and it's great that her consultant is happy for her to travel.
As the online community is divided up into different support groups, I hope you don't mind me suggesting that you also post this message in the group that is for the type of cancer that your mum ha. That way you'll connect directly with people who can share their experiences of going on holiday with a Hickman line in situ. You could either tell me what type of cancer your mum has, and I could give you a direct link to the relevant group, or you could look through this list.
If your mum is looking for travel insurance then this group is a great place to look for recommendations. You'll find most of the recommendations in the 'recommended travel insurance' thread. Clicking on the link I've created will take you straight there. There are lots of recommendations so if your mum is looking for insurance, it's probably best to go through the thread, make a list and then sit down with a big cup of tea before she starts phoning around.
It would be great if you could pop something about about your mum's diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
If you have any difficulty navigating the community just drop me a reply and I'll be pleased to help
