Insurance with 2 different health issues

I'm at present insured with Staysure for a heart condition (heart attack 17 years ago but, apparently, as I still take medication for it, it has to be declared.) Europe only, yearly at the moment.

I've now been diagnosed with Low Grade Non Hodgkin Lymphoma. No treatment required, just watch and wait. This means I have appointments booked but I'm not sure insurance companies will understand the slow progress of this.

I guess I'm asking 3 questions:
recommendations for companies that will cover 2 completely different health issues
recommendations for companies that will understand the 'watch and wait' process
also would single trip or annual be better. In normal times I average 3 or 4 trips to Europe a year and have 2 coming up soon (the first since last summer).

I would be grateful for any help as I feel like I'm walking through a minefield with insurers ...

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

Unfortunately, it can be more difficult to find reasonably priced travel insurance when you've had a cancer diagnosis.

I don't know if you've had chance to look through the 'recommended travel insurance' thread yet, as it's where the majority of recommendations from other forum members are. If not, clicking on the link I've created will take you straight there. There are lots of recommendations there so it's best to go through the thread, make a list and then sit down with a big cup of tea to start phoning around.

None of the recommended insurers specialise as such in cover for people who have two totally different different health issues, but all of them will require you to tell them about all of your diagnoses. I didn't have a problem earlier this year when I was getting quotes that would cover both my melanoma and breast cancer diagnoses.

As for whether it's better to get single trip or annual insurance, well I guess that depends on how much annual insurance would be compared to single trips. Sometimes, insurers will not quote for annual insurance as they see it as too much of a risk.

I hope this helps and do let us know how you get on

  • Hi  I am Mike and I help out in our Non-Hodgkin lymphoma support group so do consider joining us in the group.

As my friend  has highlighted this is not simple and there are different rules’ for different health conditions….. I like yourself have a few health conditions including have had a heart attack so I still have to be declare everything.

I have lived and been treated for my type of Low Grade NHL for over 24 years, I was on Active Monitoring (Watch and Wait) for 14 years and never achieved getting affordable insurance over that time as most insurance companies did not ‘get’ it but do talk with the Insurance Companies directly as this may now be different.

I then went into a few years treatment and was then only able to get cover at a good price once I was officially 2 years in remission.

  • Thank you to both of you ... it's taken a while (why don't they tell you they won't quote if you're fewer than 6 weeks after a cancer diagnosis *before* you fill in an endless form?) but I've got there.

I went with Insurancewith, one of the recommended companies in the thread. The best thing about them was that they asked far more details than others. They took my 'watch and wait' cancer into account. They also took into account that all my heart medication is for prevention not because I'm in danger of dropping down with another heart attack.

So I've managed to get annual insurance, Europe only (but as I don't fly, that's fine). There were 3 to chose from with different levels of cover and I went for the middle one which came to just under £400 which was considerably less than I was expecting ... and with all my fingers crossed that nothing intervenes, I shall be able to go to my friends' wedding in the Netherlands in July.

Hope this information helps others and thank you so much to latchbrook and thehighlander for your help.

  • That's great to hear about your success  and I hope you have a lovely trip.

  • Well done and good to see that insurance companies have moved on with their understanding and cover for Watch and Wait - have a great time and remember that the NHL Group is always there Thumbsup
