Anyone had problems with cancelled insurance

We have an annual multitrip policy with a non-cancer preexisting condition. Went to notify them this week of a recent cancer diagnosis and they said they're going to withdraw our cover, including for a trip that was booked last year. They didn't ask the type of cancer, stage, prognosis, treatment or anything else.

About to dig into the policy small print and also researching find out if them doing this would be legal, but has anyone else experienced something similar ?

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read that the company have said that they can no longer offer you travel insurance since you have been diagnosed with cancer. I do know that in the terms and conditions of my travel insurance policy it says:

"After booking a trip but before travelling:

If, after a trip has been booked:

    • you are referred to a specialist/consultant or admitted to hospital because of a new condition/symptom, cancellation of the trip will apply and we will pay for the unrecoverable travel costs you had paid before this happened.
    • if you still wish to travel you must call us and we’ll tell you if we’re able to cover the condition for this trip. If we’re unable to provide cover, but you still wish to go on the trip, we will not pay any claim arising directly or indirectly from that condition."

I suspect that yours will say something similar.

  • How did you get on when you looked at the terms and conditions of your policy?

  • There's a 'we can pull the rug at anytime' clause. Will investigate if we might have an unfair clause case but things in limbo at the moment while we find out whether we can rebook trip for a later date (and claim for rebooking costs) or need to cancel (and claim for full cost of our non-refundable tickets).  Thankfully,  Financial Ombudsman Service guidance says that if an insurer withdraws cover, they should still cover costs of cancelling a trip. I foresee a long process ahead...

  • I thought that might be the case  . It will be interesting to see if you have a case against the company for an "unfair clause" as I suspect that most insurance companies will have this, or a similar clause, and might have to drop it if you were to win.

    Keep us updated Slight smile
