Travel insurance to cover the death of non-travelling parent

My fiancée and I are due to get married in April and we are looking to book a 1 week honeymoon.

Sadly my fiancée's mum has a glioblastoma, and has been managing with it for a couple of years now. She hasn't been given a prognosis, but she is now just on palliative care.

We don't need cover for any medical expenses while abroad (because she isn't travelling), but we do need cancellation cover.

Does anyone know where we can get insurance to cover cancellation in the event that my finacee's mum dies before or during the holiday?

Thank you so much!

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

    Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

I don't have the experience you're looking for, as I was the one with a cancer diagnosis, but I have found this information for you on comparethemarket.com's page on travel insurance. Scroll down to the section 'when might a death in the family not be covered by insurance' as I think this might apply to your circumstances.

It would probably be a good idea to get in touch with BIBA to see if they can put you in touch with a specialist insurer. If you are able to get cover it would be great if you could let us know as this question is bound to come up again.
