Hi everyone,

The lovely @latchbrook set up the original 'recommended travel insurance thread' which you can still view here. Just so you don't have to go through the different pages of information to find recent recommendations, you can find the most recent experiences in this thread.

Please note, all recommendations are from Community members and are not recommendations from Macmillan. Please do your own research as to whether the companies are suitable for you.

This thread can be used to update the group when you've found an insurance company that provided you with cover at a reasonable cost from a recommendation you found here or elsewhere.

If you could put a little bit of additional information eg. whether you got a single trip or annual, cover for a cruise, worldwide, etc along with anything else that you think others would find helpful when they are researching that would be great.

You may also find Macmillan's 'Cancer and buying travel insurance' page to be helpful

  • The decision on Annual v single trip obviousiy depends on how many trips you plan to take in the 12 month period.

One thing to consider is that with a single trip policy each time you book a trip you’ll be starting from scratch as regards taking out cover, that said, with an annual policy if your condition or your medication changes during the period of insurance you’ll still have to declare it although it may be slightly more straightforward because you’ll know what they’ve already agreed to cover.

My annual insurance definitely worked out cheaper than taking out separate single trip policies even with an additional premium part way through the year when I had to declare something new.

  • We took out an expensive annual one from Insure and Go for both of us as we had four trips planned for the year.

The important thing is for a couple travelling together to be on the same policy so that if anything happens to either of you they will repatriate you together.

As my partner is having maintenance immunotherapy but his lesions have vanished, several companies AllClear, Insurancewith etc refused to cover him for a year.

  • I have been trying to get travel insurance for my husband and researched Macmillan. I was encouraged to see a number of mentions for Insurancewith and checked their website.  Their parent company is tifgroup which is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, so I searched google for 'FCA tifgroup'.  I was alarmed to see that this company has been severely sanctioned by the regulator for non payment of claims!

  • I also discovered this when researching specialist travel insurers including Insurancewith before buying my own policy, I think it was in late 2021 and resolved in 2022.

I found it useful to also look at service standards since this was resolved and information also published by the FCA shows their claim acceptance and claim complaints rates for 2022. (the 2023 figures are not on the FCA website yet).

For comparison the % figures in brackets represent the entire UK travel insurance industry performance, also published by the FCA. Unfortunately specific insurer data is grouped in bands spanning 5 percentage points whereas the industry data is to 2 decimal places.

Claim Acceptance %    Claim Complaints %
    Annual Europe       2022     85-90% (76.15%)          5-10% (4.08%)
                                   2023     90-95%                         5-10%
    Annual Worldwide  2022     85-90% (81.56%)          0-5%  (4.34%)
                                   2023     85-90%                         0-5%
    Single Trip              2022     80-85% (73.14)             0-5%  (3.54%)
                                   2023     85-90%                         0-5%

  • I assume that people know that" albert&eddie" are the same as  Insureancewith, I have just obtained travel insureance for a Christmas Caribbean cruise this year for £1154, with Insurenacewbut the policy is for albert&eddie. When asked they said that albert&eddie were part of insureancewith.

  • Hello Ken,

I also used albert&eddie which is indeed part of the same group - I've mentioned this several times on here.

I obtained annual worldwide cover for circa £450 with Holidaysafe (also part of the same group) but if I remember correctly there were other quotes provided by non-group companies.

My history is age 69, lung cancer 2014 (surgery/chemo with no issues since) and incurable prostate cancer (2016 but recurred last year - had chemo and now on indefinite drug treatment) so I was quite happy with this. Currently on our 6th overseas trip so far this year and planning 2 more before Christmas so getting our money's worth!

There's a very interesting interview and Q&A session with the MD of Insurancewith on the Roy Castle lung cancer website done a while ago which is worth a look for anyone who's interested.

I hope you have a splendid cruise.

    Derek.

  • Hello Derek.

Thank you Derek, I requested a  quote for an annual which came out at £2600 from a&e but this may have included a cruise, I have had kidney cancer since 2013 with various secondaries', being 83 I am still doing well, most other travel insurance companies will not cover me.

    Regards.
