Just diagnosed / mandatory travel insurance

Hi there, I've booked a trip to Georgia (Tbilisi) with the family, flying out next week, and they have a mandatory travel insurance rule in place now. I've literally just been diagnosed with breast cancer a week ago, notjing found via ultrasound in my lymph nodes and awaiting MRI scan to determine my course of treatment. In any case I've cleared the travel plans with the oncology team. But now I'm really struggling to find a travel insurance provider that will cover me. Getting overwhelmed with doing down long lists and getting the same reply. Has anyone had luck with getting travel cover while in the awaiting treatment stage? I basically have to go to Georgia to file paperwork on behalf of my deceased mother and obviously don't want to lose the £2000+ we've already spent on flights and accommodation. Thank you!

  • If you already have travel insurance (I’m assuming you took it out at soon as you made any non refundable bookings) they will probably pay for cancellation (if you didn’t have symptoms booked at the time).

If you don’t have any insurance and don’t want to cancel you could try one of the companies on Macmillan’s list of providers. Warning, it will be time consuming and expensive and you may find it difficult/impossible to get cover until after surgery.

An alternative is trying to find cover excluding cancer but there’s a risk that if, say you fainted and fell over breaking an arm, they’d claim you were weakened and it was the result of the cancer.

Some airlines will offer you a credit on your flight if you have what they refer to as life changing medical condition. My airline did that.

    i wish you luck

  • Hello ,

I 'm sorry to hear of your diagnosis and resulting trouble getting travel insurance.

I don't know who you've tried yet, but if not try Albert & Eddie which is the insurer I use. They're a comparison site, part of the same group that also owns Insurancewith and Holiday Safe (I'm insured with the latter).

Someone else on here also recently reported getting cover from allcleartravel.co.uk which could also be worth a try.

I hope you can get sorted, it would be useful if you could let us know how you get on.
