Hi everyone,

The lovely @latchbrook set up the original 'recommended travel insurance thread' which you can still view here. Just so you don't have to go through the different pages of information to find recent recommendations, you can find the most recent experiences in this thread.

Please note, all recommendations are from Community members and are not recommendations from Macmillan. Please do your own research as to whether the companies are suitable for you.

This thread can be used to update the group when you've found an insurance company that provided you with cover at a reasonable cost from a recommendation you found here or elsewhere.

If you could put a little bit of additional information eg. whether you got a single trip or annual, cover for a cruise, worldwide, etc along with anything else that you think others would find helpful when they are researching that would be great.

You may also find Macmillan's 'Cancer and buying travel insurance' page to be helpful

  • Hi

i’ve been trying to get travel insurance for 4 years since my diagnosis of stage 4 small cell carcinoma lung cancer, I’ve tried about 25 companies for insurance and that only three would insure me but only for a single trip, and definitely not for annual policy, but there costs vary from £1400 - £2500 and only for 7 days. There’s got to be someone out there where I can get insurance but way cheaper than this, it’s so frustrating. I can’t justify paying that amount, it would cost more than the holiday.

I start answering the questions they ask me, then next breath sorry we can’t insure you. But reading on different forums there’s all types of cancer people are dealing with but they can get insurance, I don’t get it why can’t I.

  • I tried stay sure, they wouldn’t insure me, as I got stage 4 small cell carcinoma lung cancer, and like 25 other companies I’ve tried, it’s no  sorry we can’t insure u.

  • Try Insurancewith. I needed cover for 2024 holidays and mainstream, comparison and some health/age related sites quoted prices in the thousands, doubli g the holiday price. Insurance with did it for a couple of hundred for us, and we have breast and prostate cancer between us.

  • Well, I'm  obviously  not alone in having real problems getting  travel insurance.  In the end, and after dozens of phone calls, All clear covered me. Mind you it cost me £2600! Australia  here I come. Thanks everyone for your comments/recommendations

  • I have just had a comprehensive quote for £173 from InsuranceWith for three weeks in the USA in April/May which I thought was quite reasonable, similar to what I paid in 2022 and very straightforward screening  process.  Have never found anything affordable with other recommended insurers, in fact I gave up researching when visiting South America in 2023 just relying on the cover I get from my bank with all its exclusions because of my condition.  But I wouldn't consider travelling to North America without full insurance.  I have stage 3 Prostate cancer spread to lymph nodes around the body plus some osteopenia and raised cholesterol, have been stable for a few years with PSA undetectable.  InsuranceWith have a 20% discount offer if you book before end of Feb, use code SUNSHINE25

  • Thank you for this information. I'll certainly give them a shout. Mind you I can't do so until I have the result of an echocardiogram for a suspected heart murmur. It never rains but it pours. We have a place in Spain that I haven't seen since last April and cancer is only one of my issues. The frustrating thing is that people who see me can't believe that I have any problems.

  • Hasn't this advice been so helpful. I don't feel so isolated with the problem now.

  • One further tip, try to get the quotation at least three weeks ahead because premiums tend to be higher closer to the date of travel.  But don't ask for the quote until you are certain of your travel dates - my initially quoted premium of £178 went up to £223 just because I added two extra days to the original dates whereas a pro-rata extension would have been £189.  Changing your mind adds to the assessed risk factor and increases premiums accordingly - I have noticed this when renewing car insurance too.

  • Thanks for the tips. Much appreciated.

  • Lankyexile I am the same, I am in good shape but have had secondary cancer for 9 years now, with a few other controlled conditions, and now I can't get reasonable insurance anywhere.  The hours I am currently spending filling in the same information endlessly is sould destroying, then you get the dreaded "sorry we cannot insure you" page!!! It is so disheartening.  Like you we have our own place, but the premiums are really prohibitive.
