Hi all, my wife has been diagnosed with Terminal Cancer, we have not asked how long she may have as she doesn't want to know. We have a place in Turkey and she would love to visit. Is it difficult to get insurance, we would be going for 2 - 4 weeks depending on how she feels. I have read that a Dr must certify longer than 6 months life expectancy, is this true? Thankyou.
Hi Dw877 and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is an informative and supportive place to be.
Unfortunately it can be more difficult to find reasonably priced travel insurance when you've had a cancer diagnosis but hopefully you'll be able to find some through the recommendations of others in this group so that you can visit your holiday home in Turkey.
I can completely understand why your wife doesn't want to know how long she may have left but, unfortunately, this is one of the questions that you'll probably be asked when saying that your wife has a terminal diagnosis. Some insurers class a terminal diagnosis as less than 6 months whilst others will say it's less than 12 months.
I don't know if you've had chance to look through the 'recommended travel insurance' thread yet, as it's where the majority of recommendations from other forum members are. If not, clicking on the link I've created will take you straight there. You might also want to look at this thread as it includes a link to a Travel Insurance Directory.
Most people recommend that it's best to phone the insurance companies rather than try and do online quotes as often at the end of the online quote it will tell you to phone the company and you'll then have to go through all the information again. Also sometimes the broker can refer to the underwriters to see if they would provide cover when an online quote might just give you a straight refusal.
Make sure that you have all the information to hand about your wife's diagnosis and treatment before contacting the insurers. This is a list of things an insurance provider might want to know when you're applying for insurance. Some providers might ask for a letter from your wife's doctor saying that she is well enough to travel. This could come from her cancer team or GP.
Do come back and let us know how you get on
