Hello Everyone  :-)

Having been refused at least 4 times by the biggest specialist cancer Insurers lately and quoted an extortionate rate of almost £200 by All Clear for a 7 day trip to spain???? and who by the way didn't seem to know what they were talking about, to some other companies who were quite frankly rude when I could tell they were reading from an Automated message to tell me, sorry I cannot help you any further today........:-(  Oh and refuse to tell you why!  Not nice at all, but I know the reason, they just don't want to say it!   CUP!

Cancer with an unknown primary is one of the hardest Cancers to get any Insurance cover for!

Most Companies won't touch you once they know the Cancer has spread from an Unknown Primary which is very common for people with Head & Neck Cancer

I had an Unknown Primary but the Specialist strongly suspected it started at the back of the throat somewhere near the tonsil which then moved to my lymph Nodes in the Neck.  I had a Right Neck Dissection and had 60 Lymph Nodes removed, 15 were found to be cancerous.  I had 2 rounds of 8 hour Chemo and 30 days of Radiation.

I completed All treatment in September 2019 and now only have to have 4 monthly check ups as an outpatient with the cameras and I'm on my way home :-)

SO:-  For Insurance purposes, I have been cancer free (having had it removed) for over 2 years, 3 in September.  I'm Insured at the 1-3 years Cancer free Rate.

Yesterday, I contacted Aviva, mostly known for their Brilliant Car Insurance, I know it's brilliant as that's when you really know the true worth of an Insurance Company when you have to make a claim right?  :-)  which I've had to do with them in the past and they were Amazing.

So... Aviva.co.uk  gave me FULL Comprehensive Travel Insurance with extra Luggage Cover for 7 nights at the total cost of £64.50  I received my travel documents immediately via email and the paper documents will arrive in the post within a few days.

The Documents are clear and precise of the exact documented Cancer Cover.

The staff were amazing, friendly, efficient and professional especially 'Mohammed' and 'Suzanne'  I will NEVER bother with another Insurance company again, I will be straight back to Aviva for a trip I may want to book for October this year otherwise I would have got an annual policy which I can still purchase in October if I decide to go.

They make sure you have all the relevant telephone numbers you need for when you travel e.g.

Aviva UK Claims telephone number

Aviva Emergency Assist 24 Hour Number for outside UK

Aviva Customer Services Number UK

I cannot tell you the relief of obtaining this Insurance for my forthcoming trip next month.

Here is the link Guys, just give them a ring, you'll be in safe hands :-)  Oh and no, I don't work for them ha ha

If anyone else gets the perfect service I've just received then I'll be happy, just wanted to spread some good news for a change :-)

Gill

  • Oh I'm sorry to hear that, I suppose everyone is individual and at different stages of treatment/recovery.

Not sure if I can get Annual, but if not, they will have my details online and hopefully I can just renew it.  It is exhausting, I was so thoroughly fed up yesterday!

I really hope you get sorted!  :-)

  • Definitely not useless as you've just discovered another insurer who will cover us!

  • Hi Gill Trying to get cover for my son Sounds like you spoke to real people at Aviva Online it says excludes cancer so I’m hoping you might have a number he could call He’s been given the all clear and desperate to travel poor boy but the insurance is horrendous

  • Hi Helen

Yes, they do cover Cancer, so I'm confused?, I am recovering from Cancer, finished all treatment september 2019, just have 4 monthly checks now.

I could not either get Insurance or the quote was sky high because I had an unknown primary.

I did speak to two advisors who were brilliant and got full comprehensive Insurance including extra cover for baggage , up to 10 million in medical expenses and £5,000 cancellation cover.

    Total Premium £64.50

Is your son still receiving treatment Helen?

You are best to telephone them and not do it online, it's too complicated and general online.

    Gill

  • 0800 015 2577 is the telephone number on my phone, just retrieved it Helen :-)

  • Thanks Gill, this is very useful. My husband has been given 12 months prognosois with oseophageal cancer. He is having more chemo at the moment and is generally well in himself. We are looking to go to FLorida and Madeira. I am trying to obtain insurance but one online quote for America was £3000!

  • Oh I'm so pleased to hear comments that this may help someone else :-)

So sorry to hear of everything your going through right now, I know every single person's journey is different and therefore Insurance quotes will differ for everyone.

I do hope you get sorted as I know how long a telephone quotation takes, it's just draining!

I would still love to hear back from you just to know that you've been successful in getting a decent quote even if it is with a different company other than Aviva, I always find it's more thorough to deal with someone on the phone than online as I feel fewer mistakes/misunderstandings happen.

Anyway, please do let me know :-)

  • Hi Gill,

I got a list of insurers from the Money advice helpline yesterday. Called Our Travel this morning but they can't insure.
The lady said it is because Richard has been given a prognosis of 12 months and there wouldn't be 6 months left on our return date.

I tried Aviva yesterday and same thing. Will try others today.

So disappointing because he is fine in himself, even though on round 5 of chemo. He does hard stone work and is painting the house outside every day at the moment.

I'm sad we might not get to go abroad again now Disappointed

  • Thanks for posting this information, so helpful. After quotes of almost £400 for 7 days in Spain Aviva came in at £94, much more realistic.

Was quick and easy to do as well. Cancer patients have enough to deal with getting through treatment and don’t need added stress with things

like rip off insurance companies. Enjoy your trip Sunny️Sunny️Sunny️

  • Hi :-)

I'm so sorry that you haven't managed to get the appropriate Insurance cover you need for him :-(

    It really is a minefield!

He certainly is doing amazing to be painting the outside of the house after round 5 of Chemo!

I hadn't been away since May 2019, so during the pandemic last September I booked a road trip with my sister in law, we travelled from Manchester down south and visited Stratford Upon Avon and all things Shakespeare, then on to the Cotswolds which is one of my favorite places, on to Oxford and Eton which is beautiful too, down to Bath, then Salisbury and it's beautiful cathedral, on to Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole in Dorset.

Back up to Windsor and took the tour of the castle and changing of the guard :-)  We booked an 8 day trip and stayed in a different place/hotel every night.  We had used the UK Map and carefully planned it out, saved a bucket full of money by choosing hotels that were also offering deals on a double room with breakfast and dinner included!  You don't really spend much more than that only for tours/ shopping at Bicester Outlet and things like that.

It definitely was one of the best trips I've ever made, as I have travelled a lot of the world and have lived in Ireland, USA and Australia too.

I wouldn't hesitate to do it again :-D

Perhaps you might enjoy that?, I particularly loved choosing the hotels and places I wanted to visit, I did want to visit the place they made Poldark and Downton Abbey but were closed due to COVID and Prince Charles home in Highgate to visit the beautiful grounds and have afternoon tea there but it was fully booked :-(

Give something like that a whirl?  I promise you wont regret it. :-)

Sadly, I should have been travelling to Spain to a stunning 5 star hotel between Estepona and Marbella, with my brilliant Insurance but sadly I have now had to cancel at the last minute as I have been ill the last 4 weeks and unfortunately had to pay for a private consultation after being to A & E 4 times and about 10 GP telephone appointments who were by the way completely useless and said they think I have stress :-(

The hospital A & E had no idea either and just kept sending me home.

So I paid for a private consultation with a Specialist Consultant Professor and after 20 minutes and a physical examination he rushed me to A & E immediately with a letter informing them that he could hear what sounded like blood clots and that I needed a CT scan asap and it would not wait until the morning!

So after another 7 hours  A & E I finally got home at 4am with no solution and no scan either!

Had to go back yesterday and only because of my letter from the Professor who is also a Lung Transplant Surgeon have I been able to gain any progress, (obviously because they could not argue with the Professor's diagnosis.

I am frankly appalled and so is my family.

I was given blood thinners yesterday as they said they couldn't give me a scan as they were full up  but they decided to treat the suspected clot/s anyway whilst I wait and I'm praying that I get my scan today sometime and sat here waiting for the phone to ring.

This all started on the 2nd April and I soon became bedbound as my blood pressure went through the roof since day 3 of symptoms-never had high blood pressure in my life, not even through my operation/chemo/radiation and pneumonia on top of that, it remained completely normal. I was also struggling to breath and had heart Palpitations and chest pain and felt that my lungs just didn't feel right.

So to be fobbed off with 'oh could be stress/anxiety or long covid' without appropriate testing and given my clear cut symptoms of a blood clot including being a cancer treatment patient, which apparently the Professor told me that you are susceptible to blood clots following cancer treatment...... No one told me that!

    Did anyone else know that?

    It's just not good enough!

I am also sorry to say that I contacted my Macmillan Nurse twice and only received a short reply yesterday asking 'WHAT DID THEY SAY' and haven't heard a thing since :-(  Not helpful.

All I care about now is taking care of this problem, and it is a lesson learned that should I FALL ILL AGAIN, I will not suffer in bed for a month, totally debilitated and fobbed off with anxiety.

1 month ago I was fit and felt healthy and walking mountains enjoying the life and now this.

I would definitely get an Immediate Private Consultant appointment initially again so I can be directed in the right direction on how to treat a problem in future.

It shouldn't have to come to this when the diagnosis was staring them in the face!

This was without doubt the best £200 I have ever spent!
