Could my dad have been saved from this hell?

We have just had an X-ray result back from the hospital. My dad has oesophageal and lung cancer, now quite advanced. My sister and I noticed some early xray results which talked well over a year ago about “worrying lesions” in the oesophagus. My dad was never told this. He was told that there were precancerous cells on the oesophagus and he could either progress with treatment or leave things to see how it went. He was never called back and family did not really know about this. When next checked he had stage 4 incurable, with months to live. I am so angry that his situation was not properly explained. Nor that we as family of a very elderly gentleman were not informed. Even though it’s too late to worry now, it makes me furious. Do the nhs care about over 80/85s at all? Don’t they know they may get confused and not fully understand or be able to compute the implications of a diagnosis or decision alone? Rant over. But I think this is so wrong. And tragic for my dad. Probably for many others.

  • I'm extremely sorry to hear of this awful news. I know making a complaint won't change the outcome for your Dad but a formal complaint should be made & staff/GP to be held accountable for this. They should have at least asked for your Dad to bring in a family member at the time or phoned next to kin on file to make them aware. Due to their negligence your Dad is now in this position & you expect your Dad to be seen/treated asap. Otherwise nothing will get done.

I hope your Dad gets the care & treatment he needs.  Wishing him & your family well. Remember when it's your life or family life on the line you got to stand up for it. Xx
