My partner (75) is due to begin palliative chemotherapy next Monday. We thought his previous 6-month course of chemo had been successful and he did seem to be feeling better but, alas, he has begun to feel poorly again. He's already been through such a lot i.e. feeling tired and weak, loss of appetite, and he has lost a lot of weight. Now he seems to have the same symptoms he had before he started his first course of chemo. He is hardly eating because he has no appetite. Does anyone have any ideas on what food or drinks to give someone in a similar situation? The hospital did give him some 'Ensure' but he found it made him feel sick and he doesn't want anymore. I'd be grateful for any advice.
I’m sorry to hear that you are going through this. It is really hard to watch a loved one suffering and struggle with these rotten symptoms. My husband is on continuous fortnightly chemotherapy and after 6 months there are truly miserable days.
Forgive me if you have done this already but it might be worth talking to your nearby palliative care team? There may be some medication which could help? Or the medical team may be able to help with sickness even just a little?
We struggle most weeks to find things that taste nice for my husband and then a few days after his taste buds have changed again. Different sauces/vinegar / soy sauce / sweet and sour sauce /ice cream/mango/dark chocolate /strong flavours /different teas are just a few things that he has tried and they work for some time at least!
Sending love and a virtual hug,
Hello, I'm sorry to hear how difficult things are. I'm supporting my mum with stage 4b lung cancer and brain mets. She had lost a lot of weight and had no appetite. Similar to your partner, the drinks from the hospital made my mum feel sick. I bought her "This is food" drink which they sell in Tescos (3 different flavours) but there are about 18 flavours on Amazon. They have 39g of protein per drink and mum drinks them over two days.
Also the GP put my mum on a low dose of steroid. This has helped immensely with her appetite and she is gaining weight. My mum isn't yet strong enough for palliative chemo but we're making progress.
I hope the above is helpful and things start to improve
Thank you so much for this advice. The hospital has also suggested steroids.
