Hi
Mum was diagnosed with stage 4 womb cancer in December and suffered a blood clot on her lung in January. She has been having chemo and we were told that there was positive signs the cancer was reacting to this. She had been sick through the chemo and we needed to visit an and e several times where they have her a saline drip, topped up her electrolyte levels and sent her on her way. 6 weeks ago we took her down to a and e for sickness again. They told us then that it looked like she was vomiting faecal fluid and decided to do a ct scan where they said they thought she had a blockage in her small intestine. No other scans have been done. A week and half ago we were told that there is nothing more they can do and she would be sent home with palliative care. She hasn’t opened her bowels in weeks now, she has a ng tube draining her stomach from build up. She is so well, apart from having no energy due to hardly eating in 4 weeks. Her oncologist has said no more treatment. I just don’t understand how we have got here from them just saying it might be an obstruction and then not trying to get a more detailed scan. I feel like she has been given up on :(
Hi Becky1484
I'm very sorry to read of your mum's diagnosis and current prognosis. The fact that she has been so unwell as to need A&E intervention suggests that her cancer has progressed and has resulted in the bowel obstruction.
I think Poppy60 suggestion of speaking to your mum's specialist nurse is a good idea. She will be able to explain to you the reasons for the doctors decision and why she is not able to have further treatment. The usual reasons are that the cancer has progressed too far or that the person is not well enough for a gruelling treatment regime. Cancer is a cruel disease and affects people differently. This is the reason that cases can't be compared with any certainty.
If you would like to speak to someone, the Macmillan helpline staff are excellent. This is the link to contact https://www.macmillan.org.uk/about-us/contact-us
Best regards to you and your mum.
