Struggling with ways to support

Hi,  reaching out for advice. My mum has been diagnosed with terminal breast cancer (bone and brain mets) with a prognosis of less than 3 months, diagnosis received 6 weeks ago. Her journey has been horrible - diagnosis and prognosis given by oncologist at bedside with all to hear, discharged from hospital to Nursing Home with end of life medications and a hasty bye bye, basically she has been dumped there to die.  No information has be given on how she is supposed to accept and deal with this and completely discharged from hospital care.  Any advice on how I can help her (and me) with acceptance of the imminently inevitable.  She still has good thinking but speech and mobility are fast disappearing.  Thank you

  • Hello Suzylou

I am so sorry to hear that your mum has breast cancer and is so unwell.

I can only imagine how hard it must be that she has such a prognosis and can understand that you need support.

I wonder whether it is worth contacting her GP and asking for some advice. They would be able to direct you to the right people perhaps, as she has been discharged from hospital care. Day to day the nursing home should be able to offer some help and maybe it could be an idea to arrange a meeting to take stock of what is happening at the moment and what they feel will be needed over the next few weeks.

Please consider giving the Support Line a call. They really will understand how you are feeling, will be able to talk you through what may happen and what you can do. They can also have a look to see if there is any support for you in your local area. Sometimes just talking things through can help.

There is also some info here about the ways Macmillan can offer support during this difficult time.

I hope this helps a bit. Please do consider picking up the phone and talking things through.
