Hi there, my really good friend has advanced stomach that spread to liver. He seems to be deteriorating quickly. The palliative care nurse spoken to me quietly yesterday when he had to go to bed after a not good round of dry vomiting. His family member was away so I was staying, I hope to stay until the end now. She said in her professional opinion he has weeks, possibly 1-2 weeks left. Please can you tell me what I need to know, what will happen to him, how do I keep him comfortable, please advise? He doesn't want too much outside help so I 'm just looking for resources or anything.

He is struggling to eat, so making smoothies, his breathing is affected too along with the dry vomiting and extreme fatigue.

  • Hi Ladyofthelake,

you are an Angel … what a dear friend you are to him. In my opinion take your lead from him. Manage or respond to all symptoms as and when they arise and call on the palliative team as soon as you can for pain control and anti sickness medication now!  These can be given in a syringe driver which is so much easier than trying to get tablets down and can be portable.

keeping him comfortable and pain under control can be managed and help is at hand with the gp and palliative care team. Use them. Your kindness will bring comfort to him. He is lucky to have you but look after yourself too. My friend came and stayed with us when my dad was dying and I will always be grateful. I was exhausted and nights were lonely because of the responsibility.

each cancer type has its own set of issues as it advances and the palliative team should know how to help you. My dad was well sedated in the last two days of his life which made it easier on him. If agitation sets in that can be a sign of pain or what they call terminal agitation. Google this for understanding.

keep a note of all phone numbers of the team handy.

    Sending you much love,

    Louli x
