Hi all, I am new here. Sadly dad was diagnosed in June 20 with eosphageal cancer. He had radiotherapy and got the all clear in jan 21, however we got told April 12th that the cancer has returned and spread to his liver. Hes been given 3/4 months left.
He hasnt had a great health record for a while, had heart attack in July 19, triple bypass and a new valve put in, had a stroke during the operation and also 2 cardiac arrests, we got told he wouldn't make the night. He recovered and moved in with me so I could look after him, they diagnosed with EC last year he had the radiotherapy, this caused the eosphagus to tear and therefore got pneumonia, again we were told he wouldn't make it and he got through it! He then had a feeding tube fitted for March and this was taken out 2 weeks ago and a stent put in to widen his esophagus and so he could eat and enjoy the time he had left.
In my eyes The past week he has deterioted, his appetite has pretty much disappeared and he just sleeps most of the day. Barely drinking any fluids aswell, quite withdrawn from conversations and things he used to be interested in, said he is ready to go.
Does this mean he is coming to the end of his life? I haven't been given any support yet as we have a meeting with his oncologist next week so not sure what to expect as wasnt expecting him to deteriote so quickly.
Sorry for the long post x
hi - my dad was diagnosed with terminal EC in August 2020, the first thing they did was put a stent in and thankfully that has seen him well and able to get food into his stomach having lost over 3stone initially and up to now his weight has maintained pretty much. They offered palliative chemo in an attempt to give him some more time (he was 74 at diagnosis) and although it was not a cure and the side affects were not good he was a superstar and managed all 6 treatments bless him. He finished chemo back in Feb and had another CT in April for which the results weren't great but we were not expecting good news. The cancer is spreading up into his oesophagus which is why his swallowing has become more difficult over the past month or so which means back to almost only fluids (except for quavers and frosties which seem to stay down!) The lymph nodes in the stomach are also enlarged which means its heading there too unfortunately. They have offered him one bought of radiotherapy to target the tumor in the oesophagus to aid with his swallowing so waiting on that appointment as we speak. Similarly to you, I feel my dad has deteriorated of late and spends 99% of daylight hours laying down on his side either sleeping or dozing, not interacting with anyone, doesnt know when he's hungry, doesn't know what he wants to eat or drink. He is simply existing in my eyes because he says he isnt ready to go yet but it does make me feel like his body is shutting down too I think that's only natural - on the other hand perhaps he is just conserving every ounce of energy he has left to carry on breathing every day. I see every extra day as a blessing however and that's what keeps me going too. I'm sure you will get things clarified at the appointment next week and they can answer any questions you may have. Always here for a chat. Sorry for my long reply!
