My mum has just recently (Oct 19) been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer with rib, scalp, lymph nodes, pleural andiver Mets. After what felt like forever waiting for scalp biopsy results we have just been told that they now cant work out what her primary cause cancer is and that she cant have immunotherapy and other tablet form treatment . Her poor liver function also rules out chemo. As well as this they have now said there are brain Mets and a scan showed some abnormalities in the common biliary duct and colon. They are suspecting it's also cancer (either Mets or a separate cancer) but are reluctant to investigate as it wont beneficial so we are told all we can do is manage pain and symptoms.
We were told this is rare and considering how widespread the cancer now is she looks really well in herself they wont offer a timescale despite this being something she wants to know.
Has anyone else experienced anything similar can share their experience?
Thanks x
Hello,
I can’t help much but all I can say is we’ve been going through the same with my dad. He was told back in May he had cancer of kidney and lymph nodes then they said they were wrong and he’s fine however September he got took into hospital with suspected lymphoma but after a biopsy it confirmed it wasn’t that but it was a cancer of unknown primary which has spread to the lymph nodes and bones.
He had his first infusion of chemo which is all a guess and he then was supposed to have chemo tablets for 21 days but was in hospital the day after due to the chemo being so strong it fried his liver. They’ve now arranged for him to start a new chemo regime as of December and in the meantime now he’s having radiotherapy however now yesterday after bloods being done they can see the kidney has slight dysfunction so now been admitted and trying to sort that and this will all depend on if he receives anymore treatment or not.
My dad honestly looked fine and didn’t have any issues with anything (other pain due to the bone Mets) until he had the first blast of chemo.
can I ask then if the lung cancer is the original primary or if they said that to you and then said they don’t know the primary?
Thanks
Hi, so sorry to hear what you are going through too.
She has even suffering chronic pain in what she thought was her shoulder and ribs since June, countless appointments to the GP and she was told that there was nothing wrong with her.
When she got her diagnosis we were told the primary was the liver however they are now undecided. The scalp biopsy results came back with mucinous adenocarcinoma which they said was strange as this is normally associated with areas such as the colon.
She was admitted to hospital over the the weekend with horrendous stomach pain, an abdominal CT showed some abnormalities in the bile duct and colon are but due to everything else they are reluctant to investigate but do suspect it's some cancer.
I just feel so lost and confused. We were thrown into this awful world of cancer without knowing what to expect or where to go and it's so heartbreaking so watch it destroy a family like it does
Hello,
yes my dad was the same it started with chronic back pain which he thought was down to the mattress so went to the doctors in the end because this pain was on going over a week they sent him for scans and delayed in checking them as thought it was just kidney stones which then is how it all started with saying when they checked it’s actually kidney cancer then it was and now it’s definitely cancer but something completely different.
my dads biopsy results from his lymph node in his stomach/back showed adenocarcinoma but nothing about from which organ.
yes I completely agree with you it’s horrible, chucked in at the deep end with not knowing what’s going on and I don’t know about your situation but with ours we haven’t had any help and straight answers just been pushed from pillow to post.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
