My lovely dad who is only 65 has been undergoing intensive radio chemotherapy for 6 months for oesophageal cancer and had scans and tests in October to find out if it had worked. We went to see the consultant last week who said it had cleared the cancer in his oesophagus but he now has cancer in the lymph nodes in his stomach which now changes him to an incurable status. We were then informed by his nurse that we were talking months not years of life. This was never mentioned by his consultant and we were led to believe that chemo would be given to prolong life.

This has hit us all very hard. He has been transferred to a different consultant as they specialise more in the stomach who we are meeting next week to get more answers.

Has anyone had a similar experience or requested a second opinion?

thanks in advance

Dear bambi2, I am very sorry to hear of your dad’s diagnosis, he has been through some arduous treatment and I understand your distress that it hasn’t delivered the results you were led to expect. Essentially there are three stages to treatment, curative, life extending and palliative. When your dad sees his new consultant it’s important to establish what kind of treatment he is being offered, with the advancement in modern medicines prognosis has become more difficult and every cancer patient is unique and some will do much better than others on the same therapy. I personally believe openness is important when dealing with consultants so if you feel your not getting answers you have every right to ask for a second opinion. It’s a good idea to make a list of questions you want answering as these appointments can be overwhelming and you can end up leaving still unsure of the way forward.
