Can a syringe driver speed up the process of someone dying? Last week my mum was able to sit up on her own, drink by herself and have a conversation with people but on Thursday 2 nurses came to the house to clean her and change her clothes and my mum was in pain because she hadn't had her medication as she had just woken up so they decided to put her on a syringe driver which had morphine sulphate in it which really wasn't needed at all as she was taking her painkillers by herself. An hour after it was fitted she fell asleep and shes still asleep now (4 days later). We got the doctor out last night to take away the syringe driver because it was making her sleep so much and we thought the morphine would be out of her system today but she's still asleep. She has to have water through a syringe into her mouth because she cant sit up or hold a cup to drink by herself, she cant even speak. Has the syringe driver done this? The doctor was out tonight again and said that she looks like she is in her final days but she was fine before the syringe driver was put on.

    Hi,

Very sorry to hear how fast your mum has deteriorated.

I don't think the syringe driver itself would speed up death or cause deterioration. But because they are often used towards the end of life it can appear as if they are causing the deterioration.....which was likely to happen anyway.

The Syringe driver wouldn't cause the deteroration. My Partner was on 2 of them for awhile. He deteriorated towards the end but that was

because his body was so weak.I know it's the hardest thing to witness.

Daz was asleep most of the Time in the end.Its a normal process.

Thank you for your reply. The syringe driver has been put back on today and the doctor said she only has a day or 2 left. Her breathing has changed, she stops breathing for a few seconds and then breathes normally again

This is a terrible time for you, I went through it 2 months ago. My dad was talking and drinking a little but it became apparent that he was in great pain. There was nothing else that could do but put in the syringe driver. We live 7 hours away so drove through the night as I had always heard there's not much time when they have one of those. Dad did not go to sleep the first day he had it but we knew that his whole body was shutting down. I don't believe that the driver made his death come any quicker but I know that he died without pain. My thoughts are with you my friend.

I know the Syringe driver is a scary thing but it does help with pain enormously. Before it was fitted Daz was in quite a bit of Pain and like I said before he was fitted with a second one.And he was pain free in the End.Its heartbreaking seeing your loved ones like this but you are there for your Mum and she knows that.

    Thinking of you

    Hi

My late husband had one when he was first diagnosed last year this stayed until the tumours had shrunk and he came off all medication.  He went back on one when we got told he was end of life and gave him days, he last 2 weeks, at least with the syringe drive they dont have to keep giving injections they can increase dose as needed and not disturb the patient.

Sorry to hear you are going through it, but it wont speed up death as far as I know, just makes them comfortable and out of pain.
