Melphalan and ice

Hi to everyone going through any conditioning chemo ready for either type of SCT, ice chips/iced lollies/ice in any form will be a good friend.

Ask to suck before they begin a Melphalan infusion, and continue as much and often as you can, all the way through and for as long afterwards as you can stand it! Do this till you can't even feel your mouth to talk if you can!

Melphalan can cause nasty ulceration in mouth and upper gut/throat, icing can help to avoid this, certainly the worst of the effects.

Hope this advice helps

    Hi Moomy, how are you?

thank you for this. Silly question, but, where do the staff store these for you or is there a fridge/freezer in the patients' room? Or.. Do they provide this? Xx

In my unit, they had a stash in the shared kitchen but you were welcome to provide your own if there's a particular type of lolly you prefer.

All of the isolation rooms in my hospital had a fridge so you can keep things cool when you're not allowed out to the kitchen to get things from the main ones, but I don't recall if it had a freezer section.

  • Hi Elena,

Most wards, as Ian says, have fridge and freezers, where they will happily store stuff for you, and the rooms in the transplant suites often have fridge with small freezer section.

Daughter had her auto in a general hospital, her isolation room had a fridge with an iced up freezer section, it was a real job to get it de-iced ready! I had towels, pans of boiling water, hair dryers, the lot, spent a few hours on my knees ( might have said all the prayers I needed!) with the various staff all giggling......( probably all thinking, thank goodness it isn't me for once!)

It's one of the things you should ask about!
