Post treatment fatigue

I finished 33 sessions of radiotherapy just over a month ago - I'd say overall I've been fortunate with side effects. Was obviously exhausted when I first finished, but that improved a lot after the first two-ish weeks, once the physical side effects peaked and then started gradually improving. I probably then overdid it a bit for the next week (daughter's birthday party, enjoying having a bit of time for normality) and now for the last week have felt completely flawed and exhausted. I'm guessing this is going to be a balance I have to try and find for a while to come still....any tips? I have a 3 year old and 10 month old, not due back to work till March thankfully, but trying to give them as much normality as possible too after a turbulent 5 months. When my daughter wakes me in the morning I've found I'm just hoping it's 2am so I have the chance at more sleep, and I'm disappointed when I realise it's morning and I have to get up!

I should add I'm very well supported by family/friends from a practical perspective (I know I'm very lucky) but it's not stopping the deep ingrained exhaustion I'm feeling.

  • Hi

I was lucky that, like you, I didn't struggle with side effects from radiotherapy but neither did I get fatigue.

It might be an idea to also post in the cancer group specific to the type of cancer you've been treated with as well. I had a peek at your profile before replying but, as you haven't completed it, I don't know what type of cancer you had to give you a direct link to the group. You could either let me know, and I'll provide you with a link, or take a look through this list to choose the right one.

It would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment to date into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
