Hi Everyone,

I was originally referred from my GP via the "two week pathway" due to a very suspicious mole on foot sole that doctor said he was "pretty sure was acral lentinginous melanoma" on 29.03.2021. I anxiously awaited a letter or phone call and got my letter to see a Dermatologist on 01.06.2021... Is this a usual time for a wait? I understand COVID is still happening but I really thought I would be seen within the two weeks as that is what my GP had made out. It seems a long time to be worrying and don't know whether to contact someone about it?

Thank you for taking the time to read this and hope someone could give me some much needed advice :-)

  • Hi  and warm welcome to the Macmillan Online Community although sorry that you had to find us and especially sorry to hear about your ongoing diagnosis challenges.

Unfortunately waiting times are rather long at the moment, but even in none COVID times seeing a Dermatologist often always took much longer then the two weeks..... when I first went to see my Dermatologist it took there months.

You can always give the appointments number or the clinic number a call and ask if there are any cancellations.

A cancer diagnosis can be challenging in so many ways but talking with others who are walking the same type of cancer treatment journey will help you navigate this difficult time.

The Community is organised into cancer specific support groups so can I recommend you join our supportive Melanoma and Skin cancer groups as this will be a good place to connect with patients and families navigating the same type of cancer treatment journey.

To join a group just click on the link above then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens.

You can then introduce yourself by putting up a ‘New Thread’ or hit the box with the X on the top right (phones), you could just copy and paste the text from this your first post. You can also join in with existing ‘Discussions’ by clicking on 'reply'.

It’s always good to talk and the Macmillan Support Services provides lots of information, support, financial guidance or just a listening ear.

Most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week and it's free to call on 0808 808 00 00 have a look by Clicking here to see what is available and we also have our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.

To find information covering diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers can be found on our Online Information and Support Section

Thank you so much for your reply and the detailed advice you have given, it is much appreciated during this testing time! I really appreciate the strain our NHS is under and didn't want to waste any of their time with questions so I turned to this forum for advice. I will hang on until the appointment and join the groups you have suggested.

Thank you again for taking the time to reply :-)

  • You can always join the groups and ‘lurk’ lots of folks do this on the Community and you can look at posts without showing your hand..... lots of folk do this.

Do get your pointy elbows into the system and call at least once or twice a week as there is always cancellations.

I was diagnosed way back in 1999 with a rather rare skin blood cancer!!!! not skin cancer...... oh it’s a long complicated journey, make a cup of tea and hit my Community name if you want to read War and Peace Wink

In the meantime I am always around to listen and help out.
