Hi. I'm new on here & am really looking for some advice to help my Mum. She has been diagnosed with lung cancer with brain metastases, & has had a course of Radiotherapy to her head. Her treatment finished 2weeks ago. Her hair started falling out last Tuesday, & is still doing so. Over the last 2days she says (although I'm trying to be very gentle when brushing her hair) her scalp feels sore, almost like pins & needles? She Desperately wants me to wash her hair for her, but I'm reluctant as don't want to hurt her, or make it worse. Does anyone have any advice on the best shampoo to use please? Or Anything else I can do to help her? Thankyou xxx

  • Hi  and welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to read that your mum has been diagnosed with lung cancer which has spread to her brain. I had a different type of cancer but know what a difficult time this will be for the whole family.

The online community is divided up into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join the very friendly lung cancer group as well as the secondary brain cancer group. These will be great places to ask questions such as you've posted here, share experiences and get support.

To get support for yourself you might like to consider joining either the carers only group, if you're your mum's carer, or the family and friends group if you're not. Both of these groups are safe and supportive places to discuss your emotions.

To join any of these groups just click on the links I've created and then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could pop something about your mum's journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

If you have any difficulty navigating the community just drop me a reply and I'll be pleased to help.

It's such a difficult time, all advice is greatly appreciated! Xxx

  • I agree that it's such a difficult time  but I'm glad you've reached out to the community as I'm sure you'll find lots of support.
