Hi I am looking for some advice please.

My 82 year old mother has had breast cancer twice in 1988 and 2013 and it looks like it may have returned.  Long story cut short local GP diagnosed her as having a slight chest infection then another advised pneumonia within a few days of home visit.  X-ray CT scan carried out back in January 2021 found pleural effusion.  Still awaiting results of blood tests from last week and awaiting full body / bone scan on 11th March 2021.

She was prescribed HRT Letrozole only last week by breast clinic / cancer consultant and she has since developed an irritating cough, since commencing last Wednesday 24th February she has lost her voice and trying so hard to bring up secretions.

This HRT is clearly making her feel worse than she did already. She is now having flushes as well as loss of voice and irritating cough. Is this normal and will it settle down.  Is it better to take at night or in morning.  She also takes Oramorph 2mg up to 4 times a day depending on pain also Zopiclone.

Thank you

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to read that your mum's breast cancer may have returned and I know what an anxious time waiting for tests and results can be.

The online community is divided up into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join the breast cancer group which is a great place to ask your question about the best time to take her medication, as well as share experiences and get support.

To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could pop something about your mum's journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

If you have any difficulty navigating the community just drop me a reply and I'll be pleased to help.
