Unsupportive employer

Hi,

I have been back at work for 9 months now and the fatigue and brain fog after cancer treatment are making it so difficult for me to do my job. All I can do is have my tea and crawl into bed after a day's work. I have had to reduce my hours to three days a week. There is no other cause of my symptoms other than chemo (though this finished 18 months ago), surgical menopause and lifelong hormone treatment.

I am a healthcare professional and my job is mentally very demanding. Physically I have a lot of walking to do around the hospital where I work. The point of my post though is how unsupportive my employer is (I work for the same NHS trust that treated me). I am astounded at how the same organisation can save my life as a patient and at the same time treat me so cruelly as an employee. I am referring to a lack of reasonable adjustments, demands for me to work to the same level as everyone else and just very uncaring managers. I do need to let my union know but feel so exhausted at the thought of having to stand up for myself constantly at work because there seems to be one bad manager after another.

I'll honestly never get over how cruel some people have been, especially as they are all health professionals too. I am so shocked. As if recovering from cancer treatment isn't hard enough. I think I need counselling to recover from how they have treated me. My managers certainly need training in how to support staff recovering from cancer treatment.

Does anyone else have experience of unsupportive employers? How have you handled the situation please? Thanks for any support.

  • Hello ,

A warm welcome to the Macmillan online community.

I'm afraid I can't help directly as fortunately I didn't have the same problem when returning to work after my treatments. Your situation must be very disturbing added to the stress, worry, fatigue and everything else involved with cancer treatment.

I think, as you say, you now need to involve your union. However, before doing this you may find it useful to call the Macmillan helpline to discuss your rights etc. beforehand so that you're as fully informed and prepared as much as possible beforehand.

The contact details are below if you'd like to do this.

I hope you can find the right solution.

    Derek.
