My mum has recently (July) recovered from a successful Whipples operation (for pancreatic cancer) and while adjuvant chemo was advised she decided to turn it down as she feels she would not mentally or physically cope with it. It took her many anxious months to make this decision and now she has told the oncologist and was also given good news in the form of clear scan and bloods. During this time she has struggled to accept her new norm, not eating properly or really attempting to live much of a’normal’ life. Her hair has started to fall out. And now, after making decisions and getting good news she has regressed, not improved. It feels like some form or PTSD response (she agrees). She is pretty much refusing to eat (as of the last 2 weeks) and is now incredibly weak, lethargic, can barely walk and she is getting confused - malnourished basically! We are all at our wits end! When with it/lucid, she appreciates the situation she is in but still fighting against eating. I really feel she needs to go into some form or rehab but don’t really know where to look. She is in the Gloucester area though currently at my brothers in Bristol.
It may be worthwhile discussing with the nurses via 08088080000.
It seems as though there are a couple of factors here:
- Loss of appetite
- Mental wellbeing
- Looks and self esteem
- Reduced mobility
It is important to note that although you may be at crisis this may be reversable, link in with a health professional or the above number for some advice and signposting :)
I'm really sorry to hear about your mum. The helpline is brilliant. They can also signpost to support in your area. I believe Gloucester has a Maggie's centre as does Bristol and they provide information to support to friends and family as well as people with cancer. My hospital has a cancer wellbeing coordinator who signposts to psychological support and perhaps there is one where your mum has been a patient.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
