Hello all I have been on the bowel cancer group for about 7 months now and am due to have an operation for a Stoma on the 14th of March I will also be having my backside removed as my tumor was very low down and just inside my Anus/rectum I am hoping that some of you can help me with a few tips on what to expect and if anyone has also had the full removal of backside how long did it take to recover and get back to something like normal. As it happens my wife has a non cancerous bowel problem for many years and was on the waiting list for a colonostopy so our surgeon decided to go for a bogoff and do us both at the same time so at least we can support each other truly knowing what the other is going through. My name is Dave and I live in Cornwall.
Hi, and so glad you're both coping well. I found lying on my back with a pillow tucked under my knees was the most comfy in the early days! Sleep helps remakably. Each day will fet better, and you'll find the stoma is easily managed. I'm now self irrigating each night and that means no output for 24 hours!! Such a relief. Who needs an anus and a rectum anyway? The pain of life before the op is gone and its all been worthwhile. Two years has flown by. Keep positive both of you and good luck
Richard
I’ve found this this thread really helpful. I’m obviously worried and that’s why I’m not sleeping. I’m so glad that things have turned out quite positive and gives me hope. Thank you for support
Hi Jill I had my backside repaired with pigskin rather than the plastic surgery option it still feels a bit weird when having a shower but it's fine otherwise except the pain where the Coxic bone was cut away is taking a bit longer to heal. I was quite disappointed they didn't leave the curly tail on that might have been fun. All the best for 25th. Dave
Thank you Dave. I didn’t know that was an option?? I was just informed what would be happening (abdominoperineal resection) and that I would meet plastic surgeon. I have first appointment with stoma nurse this week and also pre op assessment. Love your sense of humour. Think it’s important to keep it. I imagine having bone cut away would be very painful and would take a wee bit longer to heal. Anyway you still seem to be very positive about everything. Will keep posting. Jill
So I’ve now had all my appointments pre op assessment, stoma nurse, plastic surgeon. I’ve been marked where stoma will go. Skin and muscle needed for butt will come from me and I’ve been told I’ll be in hospital for 10-14 days. Trying to be brave and positive and keep thinking hopefully this will be it and I’ll be cancer free. Still shitting myself though.
I’m in Glasgow Scotland. The team I’ve met have all been fantastic. My guts are churning just at the thought of walking in to hospital 7am fasted for op on Tuesday. But hopefully can look forward to making new memories with my husband, daughter and granddaughter cancer free.
