Hello all I have been on the bowel cancer group for about 7 months now and am due to have an operation for a Stoma on the 14th of March I will also be having my backside removed as my tumor was very low down and just inside my Anus/rectum I am hoping that some of you can help me with a few tips on what to expect and if anyone has also had the full removal of backside how long did it take to recover and get back to something like normal. As it happens my wife has a non cancerous bowel problem for many years and was on the waiting list for a colonostopy so our surgeon decided to go for a bogoff and do us both at the same time so at least we can support each other truly knowing what the other is going through. My name is Dave and I live in Cornwall.
Hi jpsyandp also hello Suewoo good luck to you both I am 7 weeks post op now and both my wife and I are doing OK we are finding the colostomy fairly easy to manage once we get a routine going . I still having problems with sitting down for more than an hour at a time I will be glad when I am able to sit a bit longer as I sing in a male choir and our practice sessions are 2 hours so can't get back to it yet. One of the worst things I have had and my wife as well is constant itching under base plate of colostomy bag but more importantly I have had all tests done and am now Cancer Free so whoopee its all been worth it. I really hope you guys get a similar result . Best wishes Dave.
That’s fantastic news Dave. It’s really reassuring to hear from someone with lived experience. Trying to keep myself busy next 2 days. So baking some cakes today. Bags already been packed. Thank you for keeping in touch. Been really quite emotional last couple of days though I suppose that’s understandable. Jill
Hi Dave
I use bags that have manuka honey in the base plate and these help a great deal with itching. I get them from Securicare along with all the other supplies.
Glad you're both doing well
All the best
Richard
Now 10 days post op. Having ups and downs. Stitches are still in butt and jagged. Managing stoma ok just now
